Over the past week, the Thunderbirds men’s basketball team split a set of matches, highlighted by bringing home a win against the number two ranked team in the west conference.

The victory came by besting the Green River Gators, with very little margin for error, 74-72. And in a nail-biting showdown at Pierce College, the Highline Thunderbirds took the court with determination, but ultimately fell to the tough competition, 93-85.

In the first match against the Pierce Raiders on Jan. 10, the first quarter saw a close battle, closing with the Raiders barely leading 38-36.

The intensity continued through the second quarter, where Pierce maintained a lead of 55-49. But despite a great effort in the third and fourth quarters, Highline fell short with a final score of Pierce College 93, Highline College 85.

The Thunderbirds showcased their skills with notable performances from key players. Isaiah Vargas led the scoring with an impressive 27 points, while Rylon Donovan contributed 17 points. Other standout players included Keaine Silimon, Bradley Graham, and Nick Robertson, each making crucial contributions on the court.

Freshman guard Nick Robertson, hailing from Happy Valley, Ore.’s LaSalle High School, shared his perspective on contributing to the team’s culture of hard work, dedication, and continuous improvement.

“I think just doing all that I can control and trusting that my teammates will do the same because we have the same goals,” said Robertson.

Highline bounced back with a thrilling match against Green River College on Jan. 13. The Thunderbirds dominated the first quarter with a score of 44-33.

Although the Gators attempted a comeback in the second quarter, Highline maintained their lead. The game concluded with a tight victory for the Thunderbirds, finishing 74-72.

Despite facing challenges, the Thunderbirds exhibited unwavering dedication. The team’s mascot, the Thunderbirds, truly reflected the resilient spirit of the players. 

The last two games presented a mixed outcome – a close loss, followed by a hard-fought win. The triumph against the then number two team in the west conference, Green River College, showcased the team’s grit and determination.

Looking ahead, the Thunderbirds have no time to rest. Their next challenge came when they matched up with Centralia College on Jan. 17, with results not available at press time. Following that, they return home on Jan. 20 to face South Puget Sound in what promises to be an exciting match.

The Thunderbirds’ recent performance is a testament to their hard work and dedication. In the face of adversity, the team continues to strive for excellence. The Highline College community stands behind the Thunderbirds, recognizing their commendable effort even in challenging times.
