Tutors are waiting for you at the Academic Success Centers

Cam Lyons Staff Reporter Jan 18, 2024

The Academic Success Centers (ASC) are perhaps the broadest resources on campus for students who need help in any course. Math, writing, speech, and a swath of other subjects are covered in depth and student tutors are standing by to make sense of some of the biggest challenges that college has to offer.

The Writing Center is a great resource to students to get some help.

Once you pass through the library doors at Building 25, and take the elevator to the sixth floor, you can consider yourself in good hands. As the doors open, you will find a fully-staffed welcome desk that can point you in the right direction.

Even if your appointment needs to be made online, you can find solace in the fact that the staff can show you exactly where to go, should you find yourself in a bind.

The ASC is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays, and is eager to show you just how easy college can be if you know who to ask for help.

Math tutoring is provided at most levels and you can drop in for help or get e-Tutoring if the icy roads have kept you indoors on a busy school day. Assistance with writing is virtually the same, in that students can drop in or book an appointment on the website.

Though the Public Speaking Center prioritizes booked sessions via their webpage, they can work with walk-ins as needed, and the staff there will sit down with you and navigate any type of public speaking or communication challenges you are facing.

Emily Hamilton said her favorite aspect of being a tutor at the Public Speaking Center is seeing the change in a student’s demeanor.  “Public speaking is extremely vulnerable… when students leave they are more aware of their abilities, we enjoy seeing them leave with more confidence.”

Lastly, keep an eye out for the Building 25 open house on Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where the entire 6th floor will be handing out valuable information for any students who are still getting the hang of campus affairs. The ASC will be in their normal spot on the sixth floor, next to Umoja and MESA, and are prepared to point you in the right direction to getting that degree.

Don’t be intimidated by the sheer volume of options at the ASC, be emboldened to come and ask their front desk for exactly what you need; you will be glad you did!
