In a couple of high-octane showdowns on Saturday, the Highline College men’s soccer team bested Centralia College and South Puget Sound in a set of away games that had fans on the edge of their seats.
The Thunderbirds went head-to-head with Centralia on September 30, 2023 which fielded a strong lineup, with standout performances from several players. Reon Tezuka (#7), the team’s striker, stole the spotlight by netting two impressive goals, displaying his prowess in front of the net.
Zane May (#9) and Dugsiye Ahmed (#17) also made their mark by contributing a goal each. Ivan Garcia-Elias (#5) played a crucial role, recording an assist and a goal, showcasing his versatility in midfield.
After the game, Reon Tezuka reflected on his performance saying, “I was super happy. On the other hand, I felt I could do more.”
The coach’s feedback after the game was overall positive according to the striker. “We did well throughout the 90 minutes, but we could score more, and we have to keep the same intensity throughout the 90 minutes,” stated Tezuka.
With a final score of Highline College 5, Centralia College 0, the Thunderbirds demonstrated their dominance on the field, tallying a total of 31 shots and 5 goals.

Thunderbirds regain control of the ball.
In their second match, Highline College faced off against South Puget Sound in Olympia, Wash. With a valiant effort, the Thunderbirds secured a convincing 4-1 victory.
The Thunderbirds showcased their determination with a total of 23 shots and 4 goals. Notable contributions came from Zane May (#9), who scored a goal and provided an assist, and Thomas Ferew (#27), who notched a goal and an assist. Shoo Shee (#20) also found the back of the net, showcasing the team’s offensive firepower.
With a final score of Highline College 4, South Puget Sound 1, the Thunderbirds celebrated a well-deserved win in this thrilling match.
The Highline College men’s soccer team has shown promise in both matches. Their upcoming clash against Clark College on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2 p.m. at Starfire field is a showdown that promises to be a real nail-biter.
