Student services reopen on campus for fall

Faith Chao Staff Reporter Sep 30, 2021

More than a year and a half after Highline’s closure due to the pandemic, the campus has re-opened for Fall Quarter.

Open again are many student services, allowing students to access the services in-person.

Support services for students such as financial aid, enrollment, advising, TRIO, cashiering and career services are available from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Students who need to purchase items such as textbooks for class, school supplies, college apparel and merchandise can visit the Bookstore in-person, or if they would like to skip the lines, they can purchase via the Bookstore’s website, https://highlinebookstore.com/.  The bookstore, in Building 8, is now open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Placement and Testing Center in Building 1 is offering drop-in placement testing from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Students who want to study and work in the computer labs in Building 30 may schedule appointments online or in-person at a kiosk station to reserve a computer. In deciding to reopen the computer labs “We worked with the Public Health and On-Campus Safety groups to make sure we could provide the service in a way that met current safety requirements,” said Tim Wrye, the executive director of the Information Technology Services. “And keep both our students and employees safe in current circumstances.”

Computers can be scheduled for two-hour blocks, and if a student wants to reserve a computer for longer, “[if] space is available a student could request an additional appointment,” said Wrye.

As a reminder, “students must wear their mask at all times and stay socially distanced in the computer labs, and no food and drink are allowed in the facility at this time,” Wrye added.

Students looking for something to drink or munch can visit the Fireside Bistro in Building 8, which is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The Fireside Bistro will offer a variety of espresso drinks and specialty mixed energy drinks, grab-and-go sandwiches, salads, soups and pastries.

Students may remove their masks when eating and drinking throughout the first floor of the Student Union and the Bistro area of the second floor.

Those needing a book to borrow or somewhere to study may head to the Library, which opens from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“Students can reserve computers before coming in, and ideally that’s what they would do on the Library’s website, but they can also reserve it when they come into the Library,” said Gerie Ventura, the Library director.

Students going to the library will be able to use “everything like normal, but on the second floor. They can use the computers, the tables to study, make copies at the copy machine, print, reserve books, and talk with the librarians if they need any assistance,” she said.

“Unfortunately students will not be able to do large group studies like they did in the past, but small groups of a few people are welcome,” Ventura added. “All the tables and chairs are distanced, and we ask that everyone keep their masks on.”

Students will not be able to bring in any food or drinks to the Library this quarter, “but they are welcome to eat while studying in Building 8, the Student Union Building,” said Ventura.

“We would love to see students in the library this quarter,” Ventura said. “And if they don’t want to come in face-to-face, they can access the librarians online.”

Students needing to use Access Services will be able to meet virtually via Zoom. Access Services will not be available on campus due to construction, but is expected to be available during Winter Quarter 2022. The new office will be located on the fifth floor of the Library.
