Highline’s Global Program hosted an event to welcome all international students to the campus in hopes to connect them with other international and domestic students through games.

The Global Program allows students to immerse themselves in global learning opportunities, attend campus events, make connections with students, and connect with advisers to explore exciting careers in international development and diplomacy.

The main goal of the event was to welcome the international students and help them connect with other international students who have been at Highline for some time and meet domestic students.

When Olha Isaieva, the International Student Advisor was asked about how the event went she said, “I think it was successful seeing so many people being happy in the end and actually having people who have never [attended the event], like domestic students joining us at an international event, that was quite a success for me.”

Isaieva went on to say, “I guess what I was hoping for, I got it. Those smiles, they were the gold. I guess that was the main point.
I would be happy even if I had five students show up. I would be more than happy and having this many people showing up. That’s amazing.

During the event there were games for all of the students there, like 100 Numbers, Do As I Say Not What I Do, and Hot Potato. In between games the students were able to enjoy some of the few types of food they had at this event like different types of chicken and some small bags of chips along with various kinds of soda.

To start off the games they had separated the students into four groups based on the wristbands they were given when they signed in, the groups would be red, blue, yellow, and green. The four groups were later combined into two to even out the number of students in each group.

The first game was 100 Numbers. It’s mainly played to help encourage group work and help them connect with the new international students.

It’s played by lining up the two groups behind a line and then having the first person in each line face the poster while the rest of both lines turn around. The two people at the beginning of the lines were given markers to circle the numbers, they then raced to the poster trying to circle the first ten numbers. Once they were done they raced back to their line and gave the marker to the next person.

Do As I Say Not What I Do is a game that’s mainly a group participant type of game where everyone has to follow the instructions of one of the students.

The game is extremely similar to Simon Says but in Do As I Say Not What I Do the student does an action that doesn’t match what he’s saying in hopes to confuse you. The last four people left were given a point towards their team.

Jawan Guess, a returning Highline student, said his favorite games at the event were Do As I Say Not What I Do and Hot Potato. “It got everybody involved. Everybody was taking it seriously because it came down to the final points. So everybody was getting really involved in the whole group and it was really good and I had fun,” said Guess.

As the event went on all of the students got more comfortable with each other and were even making connections and sharing their experiences at the Highline campus.

Jayden Mulamba, an international student from France said, “I would definitely recommend people to come, because it’s fun. You can meet new people, you can make new friends. There is free food, free snacks, free drinks.”

Another student, Carlos Lile Cole was asked what their favorite part of the events was and he said, “ I’ll say just the aspect of meeting new people.”
