As one of the most expensive holidays next to Christmas and New Years, Valentine’s Day grosses about $27.5 billion nationally per year. From $20 bouquets at the grocery store, to $30 chocolates, and of course all of the pressure to make the day romantic, or to find a partner, Valentine’s Day can be overwhelming.
If you aren’t feeling the love this year, or you and your partner simply aren’t into the classic “mushy” Valentine’s Day movies and want some different options, or if you’re single and want to be festive without having to watch the classics, compiled below is a list of movies from horror and thriller, to revenge and comedy, for you to binge.
“My Bloody Valentine”

Starting with a 1981 horror, “My Bloody Valentine” seems like the appropriate movie to start out with. This movie was remade in 2009 and stars Jensen Ackles in the remake. The original stars Paul Kelman, Lori Hallier, and Neil Affleck.
Both of the movies follow the similar script of a mine collapse and the insanity of Harry Warden, but it is highly suggested to watching the original first so you get more of the darker backstory to Warden, who is a miner, trapped in the collapsed mine with a few others, resorting to cannibalism to survive.
Warden then goes on a killing spree when he escapes caused by the insanity he suffered in the mine, placing the hearts of his victims in heart shaped chocolate boxes, like the ones you’d see frequenting the shelves in February.
The remake follows the story of Tom Hanniger, the son of the mine owner. In the original, Tom’s dad is the mayor instead of the mine owner, which is one of the small changes the remake has to the original plot line.
The backstory of Warden is slightly less dark in the remake, having had the mine collapse, he kills the other survivors to conserve oxygen. The killer throughout the movie is kept in the dark, the only hint the watchers are given is the similar mining attire and killing style to Warden.
Even though there are slight differences to both of the movies, they are equally as suspenseful and thrilling, giving the Valentine’s festivities a dark twist.
“It Follows”

IMDb
The next movie in the list is the 2014 American horror, “It Follows.” The movie stars Maika Monroe as Jay Height, a young university student who is dating a guy named Hugh, played by Jake Weary.
The storyline is quickly turned dark when Hugh admits to Jay that he passed her something worse than an STD – an evil entity that follows around the victim and attempts to murder them until they sleep with someone else, passing the entity onto that person.
“It Follows” is a wild ride and a very tense movie as you watch Jay and her friends desperately try to rid her of this curse.
“John Tucker Must Die”

IMDb
“John Tucker Must Die” has to be the next on the list. The film stars Jesse Metcalfe, Brittany Snow, Ashanti, Sophia Bush, Arielle Kebbel, and Jenny McCarthy. The plot of the movie is that a trio of teenage girls are all dating John Tucker, who is playing all of them and says that each of them is “the one.”
The plot thickens when the girls, Carrie, Heather, and Beth, all end up on the same volleyball team in gym class and figure out what has been going on behind the scenes. They enlist the help of Kate to break John’s Heart and exact their revenge.
The movie is a teen comedy and revenge story, perfect for the Valentine’s season.
All of these movies can be found on Max or Prime Video except for the original “My Bloody Valentine” which can be found on Pluto TV.
Whether you have a Valentine this year or are enjoying the season with yourself as company, remember that you are loved and appreciated.
Happy Valentine’s Day Thunderbirds!
