Early in the morning of Oct. 12, 2026, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s home was raided by Homeland Security Investigations (a branch of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement), with an authorized warrant from the Department of Justice. The reasons behind it were listed as conspiracy, false statements about immigration paperwork, and other potential crimes.
Congresswoman Omar serves as the U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district, which has a large Somali population in the state. Ilhan Omar and her family immigrated from Somalia to the United States in the mid 1990s as refugees and gained citizenship in 2000. She has served as Minnesota’s 5th District congresswoman since 2019, with glowing reviews from her community. She consistently has won her races with flying colors, averaging 72.5% of voter support in the general elections since she first ran. It is suspected that the raid will only draw more votes for Congresswoman Omar.

The representative has been the target of President Trump’s onslaught of bigoted insults, as she’s called it, a “creepy obsession”. The same day of her house search, Trump said to the press when asked if he wanted her deported, “I don’t take a position. I think she’s a terrible person. I think she’s a terrible congresswoman. I don’t think she loves our country at all, but I don’t take a position,” and “I’ve always found her to be totally crooked, personally, but that has nothing to do with me … it’s really up to the DOJ.”
President Trump posted at the beginning of this year, “She [Congresswoman Omar] should be in jail, or even a worse punishment, sent back to Somalia, considered one of the absolutely worst countries in the world.” He has called her a disaster, garbage, that Somali immigrants “cheat on everything”, should be “sent back from where she came” and that she has a “low IQ”, is “mentally deranged and sick”, and has said over and over again she is welcome to leave the country if she’s not happy here.
Former President Obama put it most succinctly in a post on X: “If this becomes the new normal, there is no reason to believe that it will stop with her – or future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.”
Whether or not you agree with Representative Omar’s stances on anything, this raid is a very obvious boundary push of what the administration can get away with, which they have been doing in multiple other different sectors of immigration.
As is still in the public memory, ICE agents have been testing the limits of their legal powers, and the number of people that are being arrested and placed in detention centers has doubled. ICE agents must have reasonable suspicion to search you, a vehicle, or other properties, and while the criteria for reasonable suspicion used to not include a person’s race, ethnicity, language, clothing, or location, dozens of recordings online have shown the exact opposite taking place.
ICE officers have used deceptive means to enter spaces they are normally not legally allowed to go without warrants. They have masqueraded around as police officers to enter people’s homes and workplaces. ICE has also created public checkpoints to stop and question people. The law states that they are required to use minimal force when appropriate to the situation, but again, there is no shortage of footage of detainees not resisting, not being aggressive, and still being tackled, thrown to the floor, or having the windows of their cars broken.

For the past year, every legal line set in place has been painted over by this administration and it is very clear that this, along with the attempt of the first public execution in decades, is only pushing this further. Personal and public grievances are fueling these decisions, which is objectively not how the government is supposed to be acting legally.
Representative Omar’s constitutional rights are argued to have been compromised in this raid, along with internal Justice Department protocol. And the response from the leader of the United States was simply, “I don’t take a position. I think she’s a terrible person.”
Regardless of what party or persons you vote for, there needs to be accountability in these processes. The Department of Justice’s actions should not have veteran prosecutors and attorneys furrowing their eyebrows. Every person, regardless of their United States citizenship, has rights. We must keep our systems fair. The systems are supposed to work to protect the people, and not be used as weapons of political agendas.
Representative Omar was failed by the system. We the people cannot let this happen again.
