The 58th annual “Arcturus” launches next week, celebrating creativity across the diverse Highline community. The literary journal puts together a variety of artistic submissions from students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Founded in 1968 by a group of Highline students, the mission of the publication is to uplift the Highline community by showcasing works of art that represent this diversity.
The “Arcturus” is having their release party next Wednesday, June 3, in Building 2. Lunch service takes place from noon to 1:30 p.m., with pizza provided. Dinner will be catered by a local Thai restaurant and is open from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Free editions of the “Arcturus” will be available at both events, as well as at the Highline bookstore.
Editors of the “Arcturus” will be hosting the event. Contributors to this years edition will present their published works. Students, staff, and alumni are welcome to bring friends and family to celebrate.
“Arcturus” has won multiple awards: Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines, second place in 2023; National Program Director’s Prize, Design Award, first place in 2022; Best of Student Division Awards, first place; and Post-Secondary Students in Digital Toner Books, first place.
The award-winning journal is a significant part of the community at Highline College. The journal is entirely student produced, meaning all submissions are vetted by the select student editors. The journal and its theme are chosen and designed by these students. Jamie Wilson serves as the faculty editor.
The giving out of free copies of “Arcturus” has been a tradition every year since it started. If you would like to read previous copies of the “Arcturus”, you can check them out at Highline’s library or visit the “Arcturus” journal website, under the archive page.
