For long time listeners or first time viewers, Highline’s official podcast, the ThunderPod, has returned. This inaugural fall quarter episode marks new changes for the podcast as well as an exclusive interview with the Marine Science and Technology Center’s (MaST) new lead aquarist.

First and most notably of the ThunderPod’s modifications is the visual element. Now students, staff, faculty, and followers can view the podcast. “We wanted to give people the option to listen or watch,” shares MacKenzie Charles, podcast videographer and editor. With Charles’ addition to the ThunderWord team, capabilities such as these have become possible, allowing for real world experience in an educational setting.

The ThunderPod’s changes go beyond skin deep. With the ThunderWord’s support, episodes are expected to come out bi-weekly throughout the quarter. For the first time ever, these episodes are on the ThunderWord website, right along with the edition you’ve come to know and love. With this new schedule and home, viewers will see an expansion in the show’s core values.

Instead of two weekly co-hosts, the show will be anchored by ThunderWord reporter Evelyn Rissell. With Rissell, a rotating student host will join her for weekly episodes, bringing with them ideas, features and powerful voices.

“We want everyone to have the opportunity to stretch their legs & get to try something new,” comments Rissell on this new format. “College is all about trying on different hats, and seeing which feels the most like you,” she continues. “We want to give everyone a chance to platform their story. So if you have something to say, come to the newsroom. There’s a space for you.”

Highline’s ThunderWord & ThunderPod lives in Building 10, room 106 on campus.

Malik Johnson, the new aquarist for Highlines MaST.

This week’s ThunderPod showcases Highline’s new lead aquarist Malik Johnson. Johnson, now in his first month of management of the MaST, introduces himself to the Highline community. The ThunderPod showcases his work and activism prior to his MaST time, what has led him to the campus, as well as a thorough understanding of his new role.

Future episodes promise new segments, student voices, and interviews. In partnership with the Academic Success Center, the ThunderWord and the Highline community, this new version of a beloved podcast won’t be one you will want to miss.
