Seattle Mariners advance to the playoffs by winning the American League West

The Seattle Mariners will play in the postseason this year. Not only did they win their division, the Mariners locked in the No. 2 seed of the American League (AL). The last time the Mariners experienced a division title was 24 years ago, when the in 2001 squad won a record-setting 116 games.

This high seeding ensures that the Mariners will have home field advantage throughout the AL playoffs (unless they have to meet the No. 1 seeded Blue Jays in the AL Championship).

In Seattle’s first post-season play, the Mariners will host the Detroit Tigers for a best-of-five series. The series will start Sat. Oct. 4, at 5:38 PT.

The Seattle Mariners clinch the AL West Division.

The Mariners had a few days to rest and recover after the regular season since they automatically advanced through the wild card round. To prepare mentally and physically for the series (and hopefully a deep run into the playoffs) the M’s hosted an intrasquad scrimmage.

Seattle has waited a long time to see the Mariners win a division crown, and the city has never seen them in a World Series.

“Seattle holds the No. 2 seed in the AL and will begin play in the Division Series at home on Saturday…To prepare for that series and to stay locked in, the M’s are set to host six-inning intrasquad scrimmages on Wednesday and Thursday at T-Mobile Park,” explained Ryan Boman from the Seattle Mariners on SI.

Three weeks ago the playoffs seemed far from the Mariners’ reach. But through the final stretch of the season, the M’s were able to pull their way to making the playoffs, winning their division, and a second place ranking in the entire American League. The Mariners finished the season with a 90-72 record.

“We’ve got athleticism, we’ve got team speed, we’ve got power, we’ve got starting pitching, a back end of the bullpen,” Mariners President of Baseball Jerry Dipoto stated. “It’s very rare in our lives you get all those things hitting at the same time. And here in the last few weeks, they are. And they showed — they’re on a mission.”

That mission continues at T-Mobile Park this Saturday.
