Starting the year off cold with snow storms Blair and Cora

Starting the year, winter storm Blair blasted into the Midwest before heading east to the coast. In only a few days, the storm brought in 8-12 inches of snow and in most areas, ice, along with multiple power outages. Blair is the first coast-to-coast snowstorm of 2025, hitting Kansas City, Mo., Cincinnati, Ohio, and Washington, D.C.

Snow storm Blair originally started off as a cyclone that arrived in the Pacific Northwest on Friday, Jan. 3, where it brought new snow in the Cascades and Sierra Nevada mountains, then moving inland and to the southeast.

Most of the states that are being affected haven’t had this much snow in years. Philadelphia last had this much on Jan. 29, 2022 which was only five inches of snow. 

They are now experiencing the aftermath of snow storm Blair that includes extremely cold weather hitting the low 20s and with the gusty winds reaching 30-50 mph, making it feel like the temperature is in the single digits. 

At least 10 deaths were said to be caused by winter storm Blair, with most being caused by the ice on the roads that led to car crashes. 

The storm shut down interstates, caused thousands of airport delays, and at least 350,000 power outages in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland.

Following winter storm Blair, snow storm Cora has hit multiple southern states, with Mena, Ark. being hit with the most snow of 14.3 inches. 

Snow storm Cora originally started up in the western Gulf of Mexico on Jan. 8 before turning toward the deep south, then began to build up in the northern plains in the morning and afternoon on Jan. 9. With heavy snow starting in the Texas panhandle then into Red River Valley, Okla. and Arkansas. 

Multiple schools and flights were cancelled in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. Traffic accidents were also prevalent due to the weather – with over 500 collisions being reported in Oklahoma. In Denton, Texas, cars were seen sliding off roads and highways. In Kansas, storm chasers saw several vehicles and tractor trailers spin on an icy overpasses in Wichita, Kan.

Snow storm Enzo’s course in the past few days.

The cold conditions caused over 100,000 power outages, with Texas and Georgia suffering the hardest.

Recently, snow storm Enzo came into central and southeast Texas, much of Louisiana, and into parts of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia and brought historic snowfall near the Gulf Coast.
