The resident got evil in theaters!

“Resident Evil” came out in theaters on Sept. 18 and fans have been loving it. Leading up to the release of the movie, there was some skepticism about the quality of the film, mainly due to video game adaptations usually being bad – especially when it comes to “Resident Evil.”

The movie follows a brand new main character Bryan (played by Austin Abrams) instead of our usual protagonists like Jill or Leon. Bryan appears in almost every scene, the camera follows him in a similar fashion to the third person perspective in the “Resident Evil” video games.

The film feels reminiscent of the game, with a similar tension being present, like the one from playing the videogames. In fact, many consider the movie a very accurate depiction of what it’s like playing the videogames, including things like the order Bryan found the weapons – starting from a pistol to a shotgun, to a sub machine gun, item management, level progression, and padlocks blocking Bryan from progressing towards the next level.

The comedy works since it is very close to the comedy in the “Resident Evil” videogames with a handful of funny moments. The horror also works as it doesn’t rely on jumpscares (although there were a few) but instead builds tension, making you wait for something to happen.

“It was unexpectedly good,” said Jason Lapin, a person who isn’t a “Resident Evil” fan but still viewed the movie. “Like I thought it would be cheap horror with big actors, but I was pleasantly surprised. The scares and grossing out bits felt realistic”

Joseph Bentley, a huge “Resident Evil” fan who watched the movie, said, “It was a really amazing and horrifying adaptation of the games, while still being its own thing. 10 out of 10.”

Austin Rissell, who also hasn’t played the game but watched the movie, said, “Never played the games so I didn’t have a ton to go off of but I appreciate how the main character was relatable and not stupid.“

***Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE ENDING***

Many people were disappointed with the ending because Bryan doesn’t survive, but many other people understand the ending since it follows the idea that nobody but the video game protagonists survived the Racoon City incident.

Overall, “Resident Evil” is a great movie that even people who have never played the source videogame “Resident Evil” will enjoy and experience a little of what the games are like.
