A difference starts at Highline: A look at the first Spring Volunteer Fair

Service and Mentorship Engagement Consultants (SMEC) hosted over 20 local organizations on Apr. 28, in Building 8 Mt. Constance to spread the word about their missions and ways to make a difference.

No matter what you’re passionate about, the Spring Volunteer Fair had a diverse variety of opportunities. From environmental science to human justice, the room was filled with possibilities complimented with music and refreshments.

Janie Bube, head of Program Management for the Pacific Bonsai Museum in Federal Way, was excited to host a booth at the event claiming, “Our mission is to bring people to nature through the living art of bonsai.” Volunteers fuel this mission, providing field trips and tours from Tuesdays to Sundays and showcasing over 50 trees that range from 30-800 years old.

Other organizations, including Habitat For Humanity, White Center Food Bank, Catholic Community Services, and even our own Highline College, are looking for volunteers to assist their events and make a difference in their respective communities.

The first event provided by the SMEC staff this year, leads Jade Vargas, Lily Luong, Quynh, and Fuifui Ah Kuoi knew they had to make it count. “Part of our program is service learning,” Vargas said, emphasizing “[…]a lot of students look for volunteer hours.” Largely to complete graduation requirements and ensure student success.

Studies have shown that volunteering makes a great impression on college admissions staff, demonstrating strong social skills and commitment outside of the classroom.

Volunteering can also expose students to a variety of career fields, many of which were carefully selected by the Consultants to cater to common career fields that Thunderbirds tend to explore. These included organizations dedicated to STEM, healthcare, justice for minorities, homeless, and so much more.

The staff leads are excited to promote similar fairs in the future, both on and off campus so that all Thunderbirds can make a difference.
