The Highline College women’s basketball team has seen highs and lows in their latest outings. The team delivered a commanding performance to defeat Tacoma 67-43 on Jan. 29 before falling 63-56 to Green River on Feb. 5.

Against Tacoma, Highline took control from the start, leading 13-9 in the first quarter and extending their lead with a 14-4 second quarter. They outscored Tacoma 24-21 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Talor Waikins shined with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Jesselle Victo added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Hanni Amed contributed five points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals, and RaHi-Mya Sumler chipped in 7 points.

Highline’s defense forced 25 turnovers, which disrupted Tacoma’s offense despite a 15-point, 10-rebound effort from Aaliyah Clemons.

Facing Green River, Highline started with a slim 9-8 lead, but faltered in the second quarter and was outscored 24-15. A solid 22-point third quarter helped them rally, but a slow fourth quarter allowed Green River to close out the scoring.

Victo again led Highline with 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists, while Waikins recorded another double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Anaiya Lewis added 13 points and Jada Alexander grabbed 10 rebounds.

However, shooting woes (30.3% from the field, 16.7% from 3-point range) proved costly. And Green River’s Jaylah Brown scored 16 points and Aryanna Bull recorded a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, which helped them seal the win.

Highline will look to bounce back against Pierce College on Saturday Feb. 8, with kickoff at noon at the Thunderdome.
