Highline hosts another successful Discovery Fair

The Discovery Fair is one of the events during ThunderWeek that helps students discover campus resources available to them as well as student clubs.

ThunderWeek is a week of programs held by Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) and the Center for Cultural and Inclusive Excellence (CCIE). Its main goal is to welcome Highline students to the campus.

At the Discovery Fair students had the opportunity to learn about multiple different clubs as well as many different resources and programs that help students throughout their time on the campus.

While exploring the fair, students had the chance to speak with one of its hosts, Sara Thomas, who talked about what they wanted to achieve with the event. “So ThunderWeek is at the beginning of each quarter minus summer, and it’s just an opportunity for students to be either introduced to Highline and to build connections with students and kinda help find that sense of belonging.”

When asked what she thought of the fair, Pamela Nunez-Ardon, a first year Running Start student, said, “My favorite part was how interactive the club hosts are.” She also said, “I definitely heard of some new clubs that I haven’t heard of before and even joined the music club.”

Throughout the fair you had the chance to talk to some members from a variety of clubs, like Ellis Darrow, the secretary of the Queer & Allies club. You could also learn about how the club works and what they like to do during their meeting time. The Queer & Allies club likes to spend their time playing games and hanging out with their clubmates and to have a space where you can be yourself and mingle with friends. They meet up on Mondays from 2-3 p.m. in Building 8, room 302.

The Black Scholars club is a part of Umoja Black Scholars program at Highline College and they connect students and community members in order to share the cultural and educational experiences of African Americans and other students.

Umoja is holding an event on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 1-3 p.m. in Building 25, room 607 to help Promise Scholars for their Vision Board Workshop. Gather, create, and align your intentions for an incredible year. They meet every second Wednesday of the month in Building 25, room 607 (on the sixth floor).

The Physics Highline Association of Thinker and Tinker club (PHATT) has held events in the past like making ice cream with liquid nitrogen and are planning to hold another event this quarter in February exploring how microwaves work as well as making chocolate in microwaves.

They also plan field trips for the club, and have projects that they are currently working on, like a Led Cube and are looking for physics related items or are making them to put into a glass shelf on the third floor of Building 29. So if you are interested in the physics items that they have found or created you know where to find them. They meet every Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Building 16, room 206.

The Discovery Fair was meant to help students at Highline learn about all the opportunities available to them as well as help them find clubs where they can connect with others with similar interests, so take advantage of it! If you missed this extravaganza, then make sure you set your reminder for the coming 2025 spring quarter.
