Highline women’s basketball is tested through beginning of season

Staff Reporter Dec 05, 2024

Highline women’s basketball kicked off their 2024-25 season in the middle of November. The Thunderbirds got off to a strong start with a victory, but have struggled since.

Their first official game this season had them take on Shoreline Community College, where they picked up a 58-54 win.

Highline started the first quarter off strong, scoring 17 points. Both teams were able to lock down on defense, with only 15 points being scored in the second quarter. The Thunderbirds were able to go into halftime with a comfortable score of 24-21.

Freshman Taylor Watkins helped Highline’s offense explode during the third quarter, dropping 10 points. Watkins kept this energy up throughout the fourth quarter, putting up a combined 17 points for Highline in the second half.

Though the team was able to shine in the first matchup of the season, they have faltered ever since. Currently, the Thunderbirds are on a three game losing streak, as the team has struggled with finishing out their games strong.

Even though the past three games haven’t fallen Highline’s way, the team has shown how resilient they are, with all games ending close in score.

Adriana Barbee, a student athlete at Highline said, “This team has a potential to thrive this season. I am excited to see their growth this year!”

We are hoping to see growth from this team with a new coach and four new freshmen joining their team, they are set with new expectations, and hope to reach them.

Highline is scheduled to play their next matchup against Olympic College on Monday, Dec. 9 at 5:30 p.m., at the Thunderdome.
