Highline welcomes students back for the 2024 fall quarter.

Highline falls back into action

Highline College welcomes all new and returning students back this autumn season for its 2024 fall quarter! As with every season at Highline, the campus is brimming with events, resources, clubs, and sports to appeal to anyone curious about trying something new, something different, or in search of a community over something you love.

The Vietnamese student association is represented by its president at the Discovery Club Fair.

“I feel excited, I feel recharged, and ready to take on new challenges,” said Valerie Pollinger, a student returning from Summer break. “I might be a little rusty because of the long break but I’m excited to get back to my routine.”

Highline kicked off its fall quarter this past Monday with a loaded Thunderweek. The Center for Leadership and Service, or CLS, hosted a Welcome Event for those unfamiliar with campus, Discovery Fair to showcase all that is offered, and ThunderWeek Trivia to encourage new connections across the student body.

Be sure to not miss their Tie-Dye event today from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the student union! Grab some friends, make some art, and enjoy being back in the community.

Highline recognizes nearly 20 different clubs across its campus, with even more groups independently active yet supported by the school. For anyone wishing to form their own club with Highline’s support, the Club’s Team is available for recognition, help with planning/supplies, or even scheduling. The Club’s Team through CLS is located on the top floor of the Student Union, Building 8.

As the first week of the quarter nears its end and students adjust to their classes, some may wish to drop or rearrange their schedules. The last day for students to drop a class AND receive a 100% refund is Friday, Sept. 27.

One notable change for returning students would be the Parking Pass policy. Previously, Highline sold parking passes at two separate rates; part-time rate and full time. Now, they’ve added a single service fee onto the tuition of all credited students in lieu of students buying them independently.

Credited students need only present a picture ID, whether a state-issued ID or student ID, to the cashier’s office on the first floor of Building 6 to receive their pass. For non-credited students, they would have to purchase one upfront.

TRiO is one of the many resources that Highline offers its students.

Autumn can be the perfect season. The air cools, but the sun remains to keep our skin warm. The world changes colors as the time visually passes before our eyes. Even our food changes from light dishes to pumpkin spice and soup prevalence. As the quarter progresses, we can all watch how the trees and plants shift around us, and the season of holidays nears.

This season holds its own host of holidays, some impacting campus availability. Here is a list of upcoming campus closures and non-instructional days. Although Halloween is not on this list, many will be celebrating on their own as the spooky season approaches.

The Thunderword is excited to cover this Quarter for you, as it promises to be eventful on and off campus. Each week we’ll bring stories and news from the Highline Community, local Washington headlines, and national stories that bring a local impact.
