After just one victory and 14 losses in the regular season, the Highline women’s basketball team faces an arduous season that makes postseason dreams a distant memory.

The club has been plagued by injuries, which have interfered with player rotations and challenged the coach’s strategic acumen. The Thunderbirds’ already difficult ascent has been made more difficult by the declining player numbers, which are the result of serious injuries.
On Jan. 17, Highline’s most recent road game versus Centralia represented yet another chapter in their battle, ending in a 66-46 loss. The Thunderbirds put on a strong effort in the first half, but Centralia’s consistent play was too much to overcome.
With six points, Jesselle Victo Castillo led the offensive assault and showed resilience in the face of difficulty. Anaiya Lewis contributed 5 points, showcasing her relentless pursuit of points.
Transitioning to the statistical realm, Highline encountered hurdles in field goals, registering a modest 26.3%, and grappled with a challenging 38.1% from beyond the arc. Amidst these trials, the team found solace in free throw accuracy, standing at an impressive 80.0%.

The subsequent game against South Puget Sound on Jan. 20 unfolded as another demanding test, resulting in a 71-45 setback.
Alycia Loudermilk led South Puget Sound with 13 points, while Jesselle Victo Castillo contributed 11 points for the Thunderbirds.
While looking into the box score, Highline confronted challenges across multiple dimensions: from a field goal percentage of 35.2%, to a three-point shooting accuracy of 26.3%, and a somewhat subdued 66.7% in free throws.
Despite the setbacks, the players exhibited resilience on the court, refusing to yield to the mounting pressure.
As the Thunderbirds look to the horizon, their next challenge looms against Lower Columbia on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 5 p.m., in an away game.
