Conquering challenging courses: Tips for students tackling difficult subjects

Kunika Staff Reporter Jun 01, 2023

For many students, dealing with difficult subjects can be a daunting and a discouraging task. However, Highline provides multiple ways for students to get encouraged and become productive within their studies.

It is essential to understand that learning is a process of struggle and perseverance. The best way to deal with difficult subjects is to approach them systematically and with a positive mindset.

Some of the subjects that students often find difficult include mathematics, physics, chemistry and foreign languages. These subjects can be challenging due to the complexity of the content and students find themselves struggling with understanding some of the concepts involved.

Physics can be challenging because it involves complicated calculations and the application of abstract scientific theories to real world situations.

Chemistry can be hard to grasp because it involves understanding the composition and properties of different substances, as well as their chemical reactions and interactions.

Biology can also be difficult because it covers a wide range of topics from anatomy and physiology to genetics and ecology, requiring a lot of memorization and critical thinking.

Mathematics can be challenging because it requires logical reasoning, problem solving skills, and a deep understanding of the concept of math. Calculus is a branch of mathematics that deals with rates of change and how things change over time. It is often considered as one of the most difficult subjects and many students struggle to grasp its concepts.

However, with the right approach and study techniques, these subjects can become more manageable. It’s important to seek help when needed and to stay motivated and focused on goals.

There are a few strategies one can use to break down the groundwork for learning something new and making difficult subjects more manageable. One effective technique is to create an outline or mind map of the information, breaking it down into smaller chunks.

“I took history class this quarter, it was so difficult to remember all the information, I always try to make bullet points of the main paragraphs and that helps a lot”, said Highline student Manvi Bishnoyi.

Another strategy is to find analogies or real life examples that relate to the subject matter, which can help you understand the concepts on a deeper level. It’s also helpful to take breaks or switch between study methods to prevent burnouts.

“Whenever I find problems in understanding the concepts, I try to relate the things with my life and it is worthwhile. Doing these things help me to get refreshed and focused,” said Highline student Inayat Qureshi.

The only way one may master a subject is through repetition and practicing up until a point that you feel confident and may be able to teach someone else.

Although practicing won’t guarantee your skills will be perfect, it is unquestionably a crucial component of learning. You can maximize skill growth and improve your learning efficiency by balancing strategies such as mental rehearsal, hands-on practice, exploration, and other types of learning.

It may also be helpful to form study groups with classmates to collaborate and share knowledge.

By staying motivated and seeking out personal support from family and friends may help you stay focused and overcome any obstacles that may arise among your studies at Highline.

To overcome challenges, it is important to focus on creating a strong foundation by consistently reviewing and practicing the material. This can be achieved by attending extra help sessions, seeking out tutoring or mentorship, and using online resources for additional support.

Highline students can also utilize the resources provided on campus such as academic advising, the library, the writing center, the computer, and lab facilities.
