Arcturus, Highline’s literary magazine, is looking to showcase the college’s unique voices.
The literary magazine is currently accepting student, staff, faculty, and alumni submissions for the 2022 edition.
Creative submissions of written pieces such as poetry, stories, and essays, as well as artwork submissions such as paintings, graphic/digital art, drawings, and photography will be accepted.
Arcturus has been a publishing platform for Highline’s writers and artists for more than 50 years. It is also an award-winning journal four times over and is aspiring to achieve five awards.
To reach that goal and to become a platform for those to showcase their creativity, Arcturus is searching for the many talents in Highline’s community.
The submission deadline for all written pieces and artwork is Feb. 15 at 5 p.m.
“I would strongly recommend reading through the website,” said Susan Rich, who leads Arcturus, and is a professor in Highline’s English and Film Studies department. “Read through the pieces that have been chosen in the past to see the high quality and different styles of the work.”
Each person can submit up to five written and five artwork pieces. All pieces must be submitted in a single attachment. Each individual piece should be on a separate page.
“Submit several pieces as you don’t know what will appeal to the editors,” said Rich.
For written pieces, Microsoft Word documents and Google documents are preferred. PDF files will not be accepted.
“For art submissions the file type needs to be a JPEG, JPG, PDF, or TIFF to ensure high quality printing,” said Jenn Ngeth, an editor from Arcturus.
She encouraged students, staff, and faculty to submit any of their creative pieces even if they are unsure about it.
“I understand it can be nerve wracking or intimidating for people to send in their work—thinking it’s not good enough for publication,” said Ngeth. “We all put much effort into our art and fear rejection but remember, art is subjective. Someone will like it.”
Every contributor in the 2022 edition will receive a free copy of Arcturus.
All art and written submissions must include a title. Names should not be included on the art or written documents as each piece will be reviewed anonymously to ensure fair and unbiased reviews.
Acceptance and rejection letters will be sent out near the end of winter quarter.
When submitting pieces, include an active email address that can be contacted, even if you no longer attend Highline.
There will be a launch party for Arcturus 2022. It will be a celebration for all of the contributors that were accepted into the journal and will include an art gallery and readings from the artists of Arcturus 2022.
“Be proud of the work you do and please send it in because you will never know what will happen,” Ngeth said.
