You can’t escape from these fun escape room games

With the isolation of Covid starting to fade away and long cold nights settling in, many of us might be ready for an escape. What better way than with an escape room? No, not the businesses that offer physical rooms and puzzles to solve.

Those are cool and interesting but with a cost of around $50 per person, that might be out of reach on a college student’s budget. Instead, check out Escape Room card games. These little boxes of entertainment are about as expensive as a paperback book and can be played in the comfort of your own home with friends and family.

‘Tis the season to try 10 ways to de-stress

Stress and anxiety are two inevitable things that many students in the Highline community suffer from. So what better way to comfort our community than providing great ways to de-stress yourself for this merry season.

Now that fall quarter is wrapping up, students face many issues from turning in assignments, transportation, managing personal and student life, getting ready for finals, and preparing for the winter quarter, all of which involve stress.

Three out of five students experience a sense of overwhelming anxiety during their school year, according to studies done by the American College Health Association.

“El Mal Querer” by Rosalía is romantic, melodramatic, and artful

Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía is now widely known for her recent musical release, “Motomami”, released in March 2022 and for previous releases featuring Travis Scott and latin sensation J Balvin. However, the 30-year-old Spanish singer was first internationally recognized following the release of her second album under Sony music, “El Mal Querer”.

A boy and a girl team up to ask out their crushes

“Toradora” is known to be one of the quintessential romance animes and most audiences would agree.

“Toradora” (2008, J.C. Staff) follows a stoic faced student named Ryuuji Takasu (voiced by Junji Majima) pursuing a relationship with Minori Kushieda (Yui Horie) only to stumble around and end up in an unexpected relationship.

The holiday spirit comes in many forms

Christmas is right around the corner, but that’s not the only holiday that the Highline community is celebrating.

The winter season is one for celebration for many cultures, including the Jewish community’s Haunukka, the Hispanic community’s Las Posadas, the African-American community’s Kwanza, and the Christian community’s Christmas.

Highline’s Arcturus is looking to recruit student editors

Highline students may join the class ENGL 290 – Editing: The Arcturus, as the requirements will change winter quarter.

Arcturus is Highline’s literary and art magazine run by students.

“[The Arcturus] showcases the written and visual talents of our students, staff, faculty, and alumni. We are a student editorial team that brings a fresh concept to print each year in June,” the Arcturus website said.

Highline men go 0-2 at the Swamp; Basketball continues play over winter break

The men’s basketball team fell to Shoreline in an overtime thriller and stumbled against Umpqua at the Green River Swamp Classic. The women’s team had no scheduled games last week.

Last weekend, the Highline men’s team was scheduled for three matches in the Swamp Classic tournament, but only played two. Friday’s match against Olympic was canceled by the Green River administration due to snowy weather conditions.

On Saturday, Highline tipped off against Shoreline and fell in an up-and-up battle, 82-78.

Local food banks gave back this Thanksgiving

Highline community food banks have provided custom Thanksgiving meals just for the community and its people, giving much support and resources for families this year.

In the last few weeks, food banks like the Highline Area Food Bank, The Des Moines Area Food Bank, and the Alimentando Al Pueblo helped over hundreds of families throughout the community.

Besides Trump and Biden, Highline students see few other options for POTUS in 2024

Just one week after the midterm elections had concluded, former President Donald Trump announced his candidacy for the White House for a third time, but some Highline students already know if they decide to vote in 2024 it will be for anyone but him.

“I wasn’t surprised by that. He’s sort of been indicating that that’s what he was going to do all along,” said Charlene Wilson, a returning student at Highline who already has a Bachelor’s degree, referring to Trump’s announcement.

Campus View is reaching out to Highline families to help house incoming international students

Campus View is where Highline students that chose to live on campus usually reside, but the dorms are going to create some housing problems for students this upcoming quarter, since they are currently at capacity for the winter quarter.

Rent has increased 12% since 2019 and it has been an issue for a lot of people in the greater Seattle-King County metro area to find affordable housing, and it affects students as well.

"Violent Night" proves that just because something is unoriginal doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad

In the spirit of the holiday season, “Violent Night” (2022, directed by Tommy Wirkola) provides a fun film that the whole family will enjoy, as long as the whole family doesn’t include the youngins and the particularly squeamish.

It’s Christmas Eve and a very cynical Santa (played by David Harbour, most well known as Sheriff Hopper in “Stranger Things”) is delivering presents to the very rich and vain Lightstone family. During the festivities a group of mercenaries, led by a man named “Scrooge” (John Leguizamo), begin to rob the place and hold the family hostage.

Highline has 20 new welcoming clubs for students to join

There are plenty of Highline clubs available for students to join, but the possibilities don’t end there.

Highline has certified one of the 20 new clubs and recognized the other 19 as of last week, Center for Leadership and Service advisor Cassie Geraghty said.

Center for Leadership and Service at Highline organizes clubs and hosts activities outside of the classroom for Highline students to make connections with others and grow as individuals.

Girl gets mistaken as a male and becomes a host because of it

“Ouran Highschool Host Club” (2006, Studio Bones) is a shojo (a series made specifically for girls) anime all about a group of boys and a girl swooning the hearts of the people in and out of the show.

The story follows a poor student named Haruhi Fujioka (voiced by Maaya Sakamoto) in a rich school called Ouran Academy.

Community centers: Centered around community

Several community centers are available year round, and what they have to offer is worth the price.

With shorter days upon us, the lack of light and the winter holidays can sometimes lead to isolation and a lack of exercise. However, there is no shortage of local community centers and recreation programs that offer a myriad of ways to fight off the blues.

Despite the repetitious title “A Christmas Story Christmas” is worth a watch this holiday season

Almost exactly 40 years later, the holiday classic “A Christmas Story” (1983, directed by Bob Clarke) has received a sequel, “A Christmas Story Christmas” (2022, directed by Clay Kaytis), and it’s actually pretty good.

It’s 1973 and a now adult Ralphie (still played by the original Peter Billingsly) and his family are going back to his childhood stomping ground to be there for his mom (now played by Julie Haggerty) after his old man has just passed away.

Men’s basketball goes 1-1 in season start; women fall to Bellevue sharp shooting

The Highline men’s basketball team began its season with a 84-72 victory over Whatcom then a 72-64 loss to Clackamas on the road.

Last year, Thunderbird basketball had a one-and-done finish in the NWAC regional tournament, falling to Wenatchee Valley 74-59. The team finished fourth in the NWAC West with a 9-5 conference record.

With only two returners, Head Coach Che Dawson was actively recruiting in the offseason.

“We definitely wanted to recruit some maturity and guys who are physically stronger,” said Dawson.

Students and weed, a tale as old as roaches

Students that attend Highline are smoking weed, and they have different thoughts on how it affects them.

According to Highline statistics, campus has had more incidents with alcohol than with drugs on campus and on campus housing. But that’s not to say students aren’t using drugs while on campus. Sometimes bathrooms or some cars in the parking lot will smell of recent use.

Volleyball falls to No.1 Linn-Benton in quarterfinals; season concludes

The Highline women’s volleyball team ended their season after a 3-0 loss against the 2021 champion Linn-Benton in the quarterfinals.

This year, the women’s basketball roster retained two starters after a trying 2021-22 season and added nine freshmen players.

The Black and Brown Summit isn’t just for young men of color

Highline hosted its 13th annual Black and Brown Summit, where young men of color could attend to be empowered.

The Black and Brown Male Summit is hosted annually, this year it happened on November 19, with the goal “to empower and motivate our Black and Brown young men to excel in academics and to accept nothing less than excellence from self,” as said on their website.

The event was attended by almost 200 people, primarily high school students of color. The event started with an opening segment, where Loyal Allen Jr., Highline’s associate dean for student funding services, introduced what the event was going to cover.

Unearth Native hope in Native American Heritage Day

Native American Heritage Day, established to recognize Native Americans as the first people of this nation, is the day after Thanksgiving. But not everyone is happy about the timing of the holiday as this national holiday often goes unrecognized.

While November is Native American Heritage month, to celebrate the importance of our past, present, and future, Barack Obama signed the “Native American Heritage Day Resolution” back in 2009, declaring the Friday after Thanksgiving, Native American Heritage Day.

Gobble until you wobble with a turkey from the Cackle Hatchery

Get turkeys shipped to your front door from the Cackle Hatchery. Cackle Hatchery is in Lebanon, Missouri, and ships all kinds of live poultry.

The Cackle Hatchery website said it is a 3rd generation, family-owned, business that has one simple goal which is giving its buyers healthy and quality poultry.

Fiddleys, foc'sles, fenders, and sea chanties, oh my!

There has been an explosion in the popularity of sea chanties thanks to various forms of media, and sea chanty groups couldn’t be happier.

The chanty, or shanty (depending on who you ask), is a unique oral tradition and considered a subsection of folk music. They started as work songs aboard sailing ships in the 19th century when the days were rough and lonely; singing helped the crew stay in time as they hauled the anchor or adjusted the sails. And sometimes they were simply songs of sorrow or joy, meant to pass the time or bring some ribald laughter to the local pub.

Winter enrollment has begun, don't miss the deadlines for next quarter

Highline Winter enrollment has opened for new course registration, so don’t wait until the deadline to sign up.

There are different registration dates for different groups of students based on how many credits they have completed so far in the fall.

"Batman/Superman: Public Enemies" is a fun adventure starring the world's finest

Two weeks ago the legendary Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman, unfortunately passed away of cancer. In honor of his memory I’ll be looking at my personal favorite movie in which he voiced the cape-crusader, “Batman/Superman: Public Enemies” (2009, directed by Sam Liu).

Lex Luthor (voiced by Clancy Brown), the arch nemesis of Superman (Tim Daly), has been elected president of the United States and has framed The Man of Steel for a crime he didn’t commit. With only Superman and Batman (voiced by the late Kevin Conroy) being the only ones to know what really happened, it’s up to The World’s Finest to clear his name.

Local food banks provide support for the holiday season

Many families in the Highline community struggle with having food on their tables each and everyday. This can be especially true on holidays like Thanksgiving. However there are some local food banks to provide resources for these families this holiday season.

This anime has a group of wholesome girls who make things for fun

“Do it Yourself!!” (2022, Pine Jam) is a slice-of-life anime set in the near future where a group of girls in a club are set on making personalized objects.

After Yasaku leaves, Yua tracks her down to a shed behind the school to thank her, learning the shed is a club room for the DIY (Do It Yourself) club.

Opinion: Star Wars is overrated

Star Wars isn’t as great as everyone makes it out to be, and the original trilogy has aged like three 45 year old gallons of blue milk.

All three films were directed by George Lucas. The first of the movies, “A New Hope”, came out in 1977. The second movie, “The Empire Strikes Back”, came out in 1980. The last of the original trilogy, “Return of the Jedi”, was released in 1983.

"Starship Troopers" is as smart as it is epic

Last week’s movie, was pretty dumb through and through, but there is a sub-section of movies that isn’t really made any more, at least not as cleverly or subtly, and that’s a type of movie I like to call a “smart-dumb action movie.”

The “smart-dumb action movies” are films (usually from the ‘80s and ‘90s) that seem like the usual brainless blockbuster but actually go over very provocative themes and/or raise interesting philosophical quandaries.

One of those movies is “Starship Troopers” (1997, directed by Paul Verhoeven). The film itself is based on a 1959 novel by the same name written by Robert A. Heinlein.

Highline professor will be teaching criminal justice classes full time

Highline’s new criminal justice professor wants her students to think deeper when looking at current world problems.

Before coming to Highline, Professor Weir said a big achievement was getting her education in Denmark.

“I earned my master’s degree in Denmark [and] from 2016 to 2018, I lived in Copenhagen and studied Comparative Criminal Justice,” she said. “I conducted fieldwork in an open prison, where people who are incarcerated can leave the prison to go to school, work, and every third weekend to visit their family.”

The light rail will bring more opportunity for education

Additions to the light rail spanning from West Seattle and Ballard to Federal Way and Des Moines are due to be completed by 2025.

Des Moines mayor, Matt Mahone, is certain that all the waiting will pay off.

Not all students here at Highline live in close proximity to the campus, and commuting four to five days a week can be difficult. Mahone believes that having these new light rail stops will bring in more students and better opportunities.

The Student Loan Debt Forgiveness Plan that wasn’t

The Student Loan Debt Forgiveness Plan is being put on hold, and there is a possibility of it being canceled altogether.

Since late summer, you may have heard about President Biden’s program to forgive up to $10,000 for public loans for borrowers earning less than $125,000 or households incomes of less than $250,000 annually (with an additional $10,000 for PELL Grant Recipients.)

You or someone you know may be one of the millions of borrowers who have already applied to the program. You may have even felt energized to vote in the midterms last week because of news of this program.

Surprise Democrat wins dampen GOP hopes for ‘Red Wave’ from Puget Sound to D.C.

Results are still coming in, but things are looking awfully blue for the GOP in this year’s elections.

Due to Washington’s mail-in ballot voting system, some of the following races will take days to count all of the ballots. Because of this, the figures quoted in this article reflect the data published mid-afternoon Wednesday by the Secretary of State and King County Elections.

Between then and the time of publication, undoubtedly some of these races will shift, potentially altering the final outcome of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. and who sits in the legislature in Olympia.

The comedic anime “Myriad Colors Phantom World” is surprisingly thought-provoking

“Myriad Colors Phantom World” (2016, Kyoto Animation) is a fantasy anime focused on comedy, slightly discussing philosophy, and what the world could look like if seeing the supernatural was a daily occurance.

Within this world an event happened to cause the way humans perceive reality to become altered, allowing them to not only view paranormal entities known as phantoms along with some newborn humans gaining powers. The show follows Haruhiko Ichijo (voiced by Hiro Shimono) and his fairy-like companion named Ruru (Azusa Tadokoro) as they take down malicious phantoms, while getting into bizarre situations in order to do so.

Help is available for Veterans who are suffering

Veterans suffering from mental illness can get help from several different organizations.

Former members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Space Force are what comprise our veterans.

“Dude, where’s my car?” is very much a product of its time

For some movies, like “Repo Man,” one wouldn’t guess how crazy they are by just the title alone. Then, there are films where an audience member knows how crazy they are by simply giving a cursory glance, “Dude, where’s my car?” (Danny Leiner, 2000) is the latter.

The film is about Jesse (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester (Seann William Scott), two potheads who partied so hard the previous night that they’ve forgotten what they did. Unfortunately Jesse’s car is nowhere to be found in the morning. In order to find it they must retrace their steps from last night, meeting some of the weirdest people, and getting tangled into the strangest conspiracy along the way.

“DUNE” to put it simply, is a modern masterpiece

“DUNE” is the seminal science-fiction novel written by Frank Herbert and released in August 1965. Herbert’s opus won both the Hugo and Nebula Award for best novel, two of the most prestigious science fiction prizes. The novel has inspired countless books, films, and TV series like Star Trek, Futurama, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and more.

In 2021, the first half of the novel was adapted into film by French director, Denis Villeneuve. With the second half set to release in 2023. Villeneuve is the director behind the science-fiction films “Arrival” and “Blade Runner 2049.”

“DUNE” (both book and film) is set in a distant future where warring noble houses are commanded by an evil emperor. These noble houses navigate a feudalistic world with subjugated peoples.

Repo Man is the film equivalent of lightning in a bottle

There are some films that are a dime a dozen, just a generic drama or action film. There are also films that while not the most original are still very well done, think Oscar bait films. Then there are films that are such a unique experience that one will never forget them. “Repo Man” (1984, written and directed by Alex Cox) is one of those films.

Highline former alumna returns to campus as new professor

Highline’s new psychology professor overcame tough circumstances to get to where she is today.

Before psychology professor Tylir McKenzie began teaching, she said troubles and trauma led her to drop out of college, but it also led her to where she is today.

“I suffered significant abuse growing up and through my late teens, which eventually led to me dropping out of college at 19 years old despite having 3 years of college experience,” she said. “[And then] in my 20s, I was homeless and lived on the streets for a significant period of time in Alaska.”

Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” is a beautiful, colorful, mess

In “Don’t Worry Darling” (2022, directed by Olivia Wilde) everything is fake.

The film is set in the experimental idealized town of Victory in the 1950s. While the husbands work on a top secret project, the wives stay home and enjoy the bliss and debauchery of their seemingly perfect paradise.

Hocus Pocus 2 fails to capture the magic of the original

Though the original “Hocus Pocus” didn’t exactly set the world on fire when it was first released, it did gain a big enough following that, 29 years later, “Hocus Pocus 2” (2022, directed by Anne Fletcher) was released for streaming on Disney+.

The story’s plot takes place 29 years after the first film. After two highschool girls, Becca (Whitney Peak) and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo), who are into witchcraft, try to hatch a spell to get better grades at school. They accidentally resummon the Sanderson sister witches, all of which (no pun intended) were reprised by the original actors.

No more taking bull from bullies

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and it brings to light an issue many people suffer from in silence.

Bullying is when an individual or a group of individuals seek to harm, intimidate, or intentionally put someone in a vulnerable state.

“Bullying is not an unfamiliar concept, especially for nearly 20 percent of students aged 12-18. According to the Mental Health First Aid curriculum, one in five American high school students reports being bullied at school each year,” stated The Mental Health First Aid website.

Catalytic converter thefts stealing attention on campus

Highline students have reported multiple cases in which their catalytic converters have been stolen, becoming a campus security concern.

David Menke, the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management, said that there have been three thefts, and one attempt, of catalytic converters since the start of the school year.

Menke and his team have been monitoring the rise of catalytic converter thefts these last two years. While the amount of incidents in Des Moines have been declining, the Highline area has had an increase in thefts, according to Menke.

Blood Blockade Battlefront is quite a unique anime

“Blood Blockade Battlefront” (2015, produced by studio Bones) is an anime series filled with fantasy, action, and raunchy humor.

The story’s plot is about a photojournalist, named Leonardo (voiced by Aaron Dismuke), in New York who gets mistaken for a dead man. As such he is recruited in a secretive organization called Libra, whose mission is to preserve balance between earth and a separate world called the Alter World.

There’s a lot in this show that’s of high quality, like the environment really making the audience feel like they’re in an urban city. For instance, in some scenes while the main characters discuss plot, there are people casually eating their sandwiches across the street.

The utilization of background music to emphasize the story beats really sets this show apart from anime in the genre. With it cutting abruptly to a scene in order to focus on another beat is well done and always keeps the audience wanting to watch.

Students of Highline still feel the lingering presence of COVID-19

Highline students are feeling comfortable on campus, but still recognize the lack of normalcy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been ongoing for almost three years now, and Highline has continued its efforts through it all. As Highline transitioned back to on-campus education, changes to how that looked had to be made.

Masks and vaccinations had become mandatory, and everyone was doing their part to prevent the spread of the virus.

Now, newer guidelines from the Center of Disease Control have lessened restrictions as self-quarantine has been reduced to five days. Washington state has also lifted the Mask Mandate as of March.

Despite the cheesiness Hocus Pocus is a fun watch

It’s a rare thing for one to sit down to watch a movie expecting to hate it, but by the time the film ends a person can’t help but admit they enjoy it.

“Hocus Pocus” (1993, directed by Kenny Ortega), is one of those rare films.

The film is about three witch sisters from 1693 named Winifred (played by Bett Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary Sanderson (Kathy Najimy) accidentally being brought back to life 300 years later on one Halloween night by a kid named Max (Omri Katz). In order to stay alive the three sisters need to feast on the souls of young children, deciding to feed on Max’s younger sister, Dani (Thora Birch).

Comfort, streetwear, and the importance of presentation and style

Highline students focus on personal style and the perceptions others may have about them, and their style, as the main influences on how they shop.

“Yes, I always wanna look presentable and good,” says Highline student Careuiana Otieno while sitting in the student union courtyard sporting pink slacks and an asymmetrical pink and orange top. She’s one of the few students wearing something that isn’t sneakers, loose fitting jeans, and a simple printed hoodie.

Many students focus on their style as a way of presenting themselves to those around them. However, unlike Otieno, many students heavily focus on athleisure and comfort.

Frequent items seen around campus at any hour are slides – backless open-toe sandals typically seen as loungewear. Some examples include simple solid-colored slides, Adidas Yeezy Foam RNNR’s, and typical the Nike black-and-white sandals.

Men’s soccer stops a raid and remains the best in the west

The Highline men’s soccer team beat the Raiders with a 4-1 victory last Wednesday.

After beating 0-9-0 Pierce, the Thunderbirds are 5-4-1 in conference and maintained their first place spot in the NWAC West.

On Wednesday, two Thunderbirds accounted for the four goals made by Highline.

In the first period, Highline’s Zane May scored two goals assisted by Jose Pineda-Anguiano. Freshman Ryo Takeuchi added another goal unassisted.

In the second period, Takeuchi sealed the deal with another goal in the 66th minute assisted again by Pineda-Anguiano.

Sophomore Jose Pineda-Anguiano demonstrated his ability to get his teammates in scoring position with three assists. He currently holds two goals and five assists for this season.

“It wasn’t a very tough game for me. Pierce is at the bottom of the league for now and it was easy for us,” said Center Attacking Mid Ryo Takeuchi.

The Thing perfectly taps into the inherent horror and terror of the unknown

There are few horror movies that continue to be scary as years go on, “The Thing” (1982, directed by John Carpenter, who is famous for films like “Halloween” and “Escape from New York”) is one of those movies.

The movie itself is a loose adaptation of the film “The Thing from Another World” (1951, directed by Christian Nyby) which in itself was an adaptation of the 1938 novella, “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell. Out of the two films, Carpenter’s version follows the original short story closer.

The movie’s plot follows a research team in Antarctica, living in a station called Outpost 31. The small team consists of: helicopter pilot, Maccready (played by frequent Carpenter collaborator, Curt Russell); commander of the station, Garry (Donald Moffet); mechanics Childs (Keith David) and Palmer (David Clennon); biologists Blair (Wilford Brimley) and Fuchs (Joel Polis); physician Copper (Richard Dysart); radio operator Windows (Thomas G. Waites); geologist Norris (Charles Hallahan); meteorologist Bennings (Peter Maloney); dog handler Clark (Richard Masur); and station cook Nauls (T.K. Carter).

Their usual routines of boredom and drinking are interrupted when an alien creature, that has the ability to assimilate and take the forms of others, infiltrates their base. It’s up to these unlikely heroes to determine which among them is truly human and which are imitations before it’s too late.

Highline’s enrollment woes continue

Highline enrollment takes a big drop this year, but there is still time for recovery.

As of October 11, which is the 109th day of registration, Highline has a headcount of 7,245. In comparison, at this point last year the total headcount was 7,781. The full-time equivalent count is at 5,041, while it was at 5,533 last year.

This drop is substantial, as it is the biggest drop in numbers that Highline has had in the last five years for both the headcount and full-time equivalents.

The headcount is a metric used to measure how many total students are enrolled. However, Highline also measures students by seeing how many full-time equivalent students there are.

Hijabs and self-identity

Hijabs are worn by plenty of Muslim and non-Muslim woman all over the world, but they receive criticism from supporters and critics.

There are plenty of people wearing hijabs on the Highline campus, and those students are no stranger to these cultural concerns.

There are many people from many ethnicities who proudly wear their hijabs to symbolize their pride in their ethnic identity. This can be seen in countries all around the world like Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia, and Afghanistan.

Hijabs aren’t just a piece of clothing though, they are so much more than that. They signify many things for many different people. It could be for religion or even a commitment to self.

Mixed reactions for non-traditional students being back on campus

Non-traditional students are grateful to be back on campus but still want more flexibility, as Highline tries to find the right balance between in-person and online instruction.

Highline students from non-traditional backgrounds, such as veterans, English-as-Second-Language (ESL) students, and international students, bring a variety of experiences to the campus community. From serving abroad in the Middle East, to being the first in their families to attend college, their differences enrich Highline College and their enthusiasm about being in the classroom again is contagious.

After taking solely online classes via Zoom, some are thrilled to be on campus for the opportunity to meet their classmates. “It’s amazing,” said Vanessa Argueta, a second year student studying English who is originally from El Savador. “You can talk more with other students…Zoom [is] ok, but you can learn more in-person.”

Students receive a warm welcome in post pandemic return to campus

Highline students and staff report a great start to the Fall 2022 quarter after almost two years of online school through a pandemic.

“Most of my classes were all online, but when I started working as a barista I noticed campus was really quiet, there weren’t that many people around,” said Summer Koenig, barista at Highline’s Fireside Bistro.

Due to COVID, a majority of classes were held online which made a lot of students feel isolated from other people.

Most of the in-person classroom time was limited for certain periods of time and it restricted how many people could attend in-person classes.

One on-campus student, Vanya Madrigal said, “It’s easier to learn with other students around to ask questions to, there’s more connection with in-person classes.”

The remake of Pinocchio takes the charm and heart out of the original

Disney’s mix of live action and CGI remake of Pinocchio (2022, directed by Robert Zemeckis) of the 1940 original, is another in a long list of live action/CGI remakes that are vastly inferior to the originals they’re based on.

The story follows Pinocchio (voiced by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth), a wooden puppet created by a lonely old wood carver named Geppetto (Tom Hanks).

One night while Geppetto is wishing upon a shooting star for a son. His wish is granted by the Blue Fairy (Cynthia Erivo), who puts life into the wooden puppet.
