Campus View is reaching out to Highline families to help house incoming international students

Campus View is where Highline students that chose to live on campus usually reside, but the dorms are going to create some housing problems for students this upcoming quarter, since they are currently at capacity for the winter quarter.

Rent has increased 12% since 2019 and it has been an issue for a lot of people in the greater Seattle-King County metro area to find affordable housing, and it affects students as well.

“While there is more affordable housing available in south King County, it can still be challenging to find housing that is affordable, safe and convenient for students,”said Josh Gerstman, vice president of International Advisement.

“With the Federal Way Light Rail extension adding the Kent-Des Moines Station in 2025, there will also be significant transit oriented construction, which may include new housing options provided by commercial developers and/or community organizations,” Gerstman continued.

Highline is one of the many colleges that offer housing in Washington state. It is very uncommon for community colleges to offer housing, and colleges in Washington do have limited housing, but not at the scale or number that universities offer, said Gerstman.

“Campus View opened for students during the 2019 winter quarter. It was originally scheduled to open earlier but there had been construction delays.

Occupancy in the building built up gradually but during spring 2020, occupancy decreased dramatically due to the pandemic and restrictions on student housing during that time,” Gerstman said.

“At this point, Campus View is full for winter quarter 2023. Individuals can apply to be on a waitlist, but based on current residents’ plans to continue living in housing and new applicants that have been confirmed, we’re at capacity.

We recommend that students interested in a room at Campus View start the application process 2-3 months prior to the start of the next quarter,” said Gerstman.

The Highline ISP (International Students Program) is reaching out to Highline families to see if they are interested in hosting an international student for the upcoming winter quarter.

“In general, Campus View continues to partner with the ISP office, athletics, and making sure that the info shared with the campus as a whole is updated and accurate,” said Gerstman

Those that are interested in applying for housing will be put on a waiting list, while current residents applications have been confirmed.

Unfortunately, when it comes to housing in Campus View it’s a first come, first served basis. There are, however homestay agencies like Intercultural Homestay, that will recruit families for the Highline College incoming international students.

“Campus View is available on a first come basis, once it’s full we don’t have alternative housing. There are resources on campus to learn about housing in the community and additional resources through the Benefits Hub,” Gerstman said.

For this winter quarter, Campus View has reached full capacity, but there is hope for new openings in the spring.
