Highline women’s basketball tackles road tests

The recent away games for the Highline College women’s basketball team posed challenges against Pierce College and Green River College. Although the results may not have been in their favor, the individual performances on the court highlighted the team’s adaptability.

In the matchup against Pierce College on Jan. 10, Highline faced a tough battle, ending with a 71-50 loss. 

Anaiya Lewis showcased her tenacity, contributing 15 points and securing 11 rebounds. Rahi-Mya Sumler added another 15 points, exhibiting her scoring versatility. Despite a closely contested first half, the Thunderbirds faced challenges in the second, resulting in the final score.

Transitioning to the game against Green River College on Jan. 13, Highline encountered another strong opponent, concluding with a 69-37 defeat. 

Anaiya Lewis once again stood out with a double-double, registering 10 points and 11 rebounds. Taliyaha Wright contributed 9 points, demonstrating her scoring efficiency. Despite the outcome, the collective effort from the team was evident.

Examining the breakdown of the games, both the Raiders and the Gators gained early advantages, setting the tone for the matchups. The first quarters were closely contested, but the opponents gradually extended their leads. Despite strategic efforts in the second halves, the Thunderbirds faced challenges in regaining control.

In post-game reflections, the coaching staff and players acknowledged the tough competition, emphasizing the need for adjustments and continued growth. The head coach did not accept interview requests, underscoring the team’s focus on internal discussions and improvements.

As the Thunderbirds return from these road challenges, they bring valuable experiences that will contribute to their development throughout the season. The team remains committed to overcoming obstacles, fine-tuning strategies, and showing adaptability ahead of their next games.

Looking ahead, the Thunderbirds’ next challenge came when they matched up with Centralia College on Jan. 17, with results not available at press time. Then they will play on Saturday, Jan. 20 at home against South Puget Sound at noon.
