Highline women’s basketball shows resilience in the face of adversity

The Highline women’s basketball team faced an intense three-day challenge during the Highline College Women’s Basketball Crossover, competing against formidable opponents. While the outcomes weren’t in their favor, individual performances illuminated the court and provided glimpses of the team’s potential.

In the opening game against Yakima Valley, the Thunderbirds exhibited resilience despite falling short with a final score of 74-54.

Jesselle Victo Castillo showcased her dedication, leading the team with 19 points. Sarah Gatluak’s performance, contributing 9 points, demonstrated her scoring prowess. Anaiya Lewis added 9 points and 6 rebounds, highlighting her multifaceted skills on the court.

Transitioning to the following day’s matchup against Clark, Highline faced another formidable adversary. The game ended with a score of 56-38, but Lewis emerged as a key player, notching 9 points and securing 6 rebounds. The team demonstrated commendable teamwork, although the challenges presented by Clark’s defense proved difficult to overcome.

Sunday brought the final clash in the Crossover against Shoreline, concluding with a 91-41 defeat for Highline.

Gatluak once again exhibited her scoring prowess, contributing 19 points. The game served as a test of the team’s resilience, showcasing their determination in the face of adversity.

Transitioning from the Crossover to regular-season action, the Thunderbirds faced Everett on Dec. 28. Despite the 57-46 loss, the team exhibited commendable efforts.

Gatluak continued to lead the scoring charts with 19 points, showcasing her consistency on the offensive end. The team faced adversity, yet the players displayed unity and determination.

Closing out the year against Skagit Valley on Dec. 30, Highline confronted a tough opponent, resulting in a 69-48 defeat.

Rahi-Mya Sumler emerged as a notable contributor off the bench, scoring an impressive 17 points. The Lady Thunderbirds demonstrated resilience, indicating their commitment to improvement.

As the season progresses, the coaching staff and players reflect on the challenges faced, drawing inspiration from individual performances. Jesselle Victo Castillo’s leadership, Sarah Gatluak’s scoring prowess, and Anaiya Lewis’s multifaceted contributions are pivotal for the team’s growth.
