Highline’s students can participate in this year’s Global Fest where they will have the opportunity to learn about diverse cultures and develop meaningful relationships with peers.
The Global Student Ambassadors will be hosting the event on Wednesday, May 17 from 1-4 p.m. in building 8 on the first floor.
Highline’s Global Student Ambassadors are a group of students that plan and organize events within the school year to bring communities and cultures together.
Global Student Ambassador member Brigit Mokaya said and emphasized the idea of Global Fest being the event where students from various places across the world can come together as one.
“The purpose of [the] Global Festival is bridging the gap between international students and domestic students while learning and growing as a community and getting to learn about other people’s cultures,” Mokaya said. “Also making Highline community a home away from home.”
Global Fest 2023 will consist of live performances from different students showing their culture and more.
“Students will get to see the different dances and singing from the different cultures represented. There will also be a Zumba performance and different clubs will be performing,” Mokaya said.
Although the Global Fest is underway, Brigit Mokaya said the team has encountered several obstacles in putting it together – one being trying to get people involved.
“Some of the challenges was having one of our team members leave us because she graduated. Also it was really hard to get the students to sign up for both the cultural performances and cultural booth,” Mokaya said. “[And] us not having a supervisor was challenging because we had to transition from one temporary supervisor to another and that was hard because they had to juggle their tasks and responsibilities and at the same time supervise us.”
The first 200 participants, who complete the Global Fest passports will receive a free meal from one of the food trucks provided, including staff who volunteer for the event.
Attendees may attend, sign up for a cultural booth, or sign up to take part in a live performance.
A cultural booth is a reserved table for participants to highlight objects, presentation boards, or games of their culture. Participants may also do a live performance of singing, dancing, or reading poetry.
