Winter enrollment has begun, don’t miss the deadlines for next quarter

Staff Reporter Nov 24, 2022

Highline Winter enrollment has opened for new course registration, so don’t wait until the deadline to sign up.

There are different registration dates for different groups of students based on how many credits they have completed so far in the fall.

“Priority registration for students participating in certain programs began November 3. Then, between November 7-10, there were a series of registration dates for different groups of students based on how many credits they’ve earned so far,” said Dr. Teri Balkenende, the Social Sciences Division Chair.

All new and returning students are now able to register for classes. For new students, they are required to attend the new student orientation before signing up for classes.

“As of Monday, November 14, however, we’ve reached the point of open enrollment. All new and returning students are now eligible to register for classes, though first-time Highline students who have never attended college are required to attend a New Student Orientation before signing up,” said Balkenende

“Students can find the specific instructions at: Steps to Enroll. And for brand new students, they should visit: https://admissions.highline.edu/get-started/,” said Josh Gerstman, the Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

Classes that are mostly being taken for the winter quarter would be course requirements, for those working on getting their AA-DTA degrees to transfer off to a four year school.

“For students working toward the AA-DTA degree to transfer to a 4-year university, for example, the required English or Math courses are always priority choices, and there are required courses for other pathway degrees and certificates as well. However, students can often choose between different options to meet their degree requirements,” said Balkenende.

Some of the classes that were added to this year are: CS& 131 – Computer science I C++; EGS 217 – U.S. Racial and Ethnic Politic; GEO 108 – Dinosaur Geobiology; LEGAL 235 – Employment Law; PE 159 & 259 – Sports Conditioning; and STEM 101 – Pathway to STEM success. These were some courses that were already part of the curriculum but weren’t implemented in winter of ‘21 and ‘22.

“I’d rather encourage students to check in with their advisors to see if there are new (or old) offerings that might suit their personal needs,” Balkenende said.

In the Winter ‘22 quarter, when students began returning to campus as there began to be more in-person classes, there were eight classes that were canceled due to low enrollment (which equates to around 7% of class offerings.)
