On Monday, Sept. 28 2026, the Trump administration announced they had rolled back a Biden era policy that included LGBTQ people under the sex based discrimination policy Title IX.
The decision comes after years of the administration cracking down on LGBTQ related issues and creating policies to limit specific freedoms. For example, pretty quickly after taking office, 34-time felon Donald Trump signed an executive order barring openly transgender individuals from enlisting in the U.S. military.
In particular, a repeated talking point has been transgender people in sports. The narrative being spun claims that transgender women are secretly just predatory men that are trying to creep on girls in sports. Not only are queer people more likely to experience sexual violence than straight people, but most recorded cases of sexual violence are committed by people who identify as cisgender men.

United States Secretary of Education Linda McMahon claims the revision serves to clear up confusion on what Title IX means. McMahon said, “Thanks to today’s action, the published Title IX regulations faithfully reflect court orders and congressional intent — reducing confusion for parents, students, and educational institutions.”
The decision has left groups torn, with opinions ranging from supporters hailing this as protection for women in sports while detractors like the Human Rights Campaign raising concerns of discrimination and sexual violence.
