The road to the quarterfinals was anything but easy, as the Thunderbirds struggled in the competitive West Region. The Highline College men’s basketball team will face Skagit Valley in the NWAC Championship quarterfinals on Friday, March 7 at Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash.
Highline comes into the game with a 19-10 overall record, finishing 7-7 in conference play. The team showed off its progress with notable wins, including a resounding 118-103 victory over Olympic and a hard-fought 86-84 win against Mt. Hood during the Clackamas Holiday Showcase.
Despite facing setbacks, including a two-game losing streak to close out the regular season, Highline’s balanced mix of experienced sophomores and dynamic freshmen propelled them into the postseason.
The team’s offensive firepower has been a driving factor, with consistent scoring performances across the roster. Guard Isaiah Vargas has been a standout player, earning Second Team All-Region recognition for his contributions. Vargas’ ability to create scoring opportunities and lead the team on both ends of the floor has been instrumental to Highline’s success.
Skagit Valley Cardinals will be a formidable challenge for the team. The number one ranked Cardinals have earned a reputation for disciplined defense, making them the tournament’s top contender. This is the first meeting between the Thunderbirds and the Cardinals in the 24-25 season.
Highline is among the top 16 teams in Washington, proving their dedication throughout the season. Highline will need to play their best to advance past this stage and keep the dream of winning an NWAC Championship alive.
Good luck to the Thunderbirds!
