The company Boston Dynamics is the leader in the creation of dexterous robotics on a global scale. Their robots are revolutionary. Their robots can navigate. They can lift heavy objects. They can jump. But most importantly, they can dance.
Their first viral robot would be Atlas. Atlas is a hydraulic robot that stands on its own two feet. Atlas is a robot that walks, jogs, and jumps. With these abilities, Atlas is about to maneuver around. The power of Atlas’s hydraulics allows them to lift and throw objects, even to places above it. Atlas has dexterity, agility, and strength.
Atlas is the culmination of years of development and has been through many revisions. Atlas first debuted all the way back in 2013 and had many meaningful improvements over the years. Atlas is able to perceive its surroundings and generate a path accordingly. If Atlas is given a path, it can also be assigned to do little tricks – like backflips.
Atlas is great at moving around, it can do parkour like jumping block to block. Speaking of moves, let it be known that Atlas has the moves: Atlas is able to dance, it might even be better than some people. They can do the running man along with many other dances. Atlas is not one to be pushed around though, Atlas is able to stabilize itself after being nudged, shoved, or pushed.
The first commercially available robot by Boston Dynamics would be Spot, the robot dog. Spot is an electric quadruped robot. Spot is used in places where humans shouldn’t be going. Spot can be controlled from a remote location. Spot has been useful in situations where the surroundings are hazardous or could potentially be dangerous to humans.
While Spot can be remote controlled, it can also be programmed to follow a route where it can follow its routine inspections. Spot in its base form, can only be used for surveying the surroundings. Spot has some additional attachments that can be bought separately.
The attachments are high in quality but are costly, however if you bought Spot, most would expect you to have room in the budget for its attachments. The target audience for Spot would be on the company level, however it is accessible to individuals.
Spot’s attachments include a high-definition camera called Orbit. Spot also has an attachment called Arm and you’ll never guess what it does. Arm is a mechanical arm that is attached on top of Spot. Orbit is a high-quality camera that has many sensors. These sensors will catch things that you might have missed.
Spot can follow a route and will act as a Google Maps Car that acts in live time. Spot is able to do the repetitive tasks of routine checkups with its sensors. While Spot is not as dexterous as Atlas, it is able to maneuver around. While not to the same level, Spot can dance as well.
Boston Dynamics recently came out with a new model for Atlas. The models hardly have any similarities when it comes to the looks. The new model is essentially a new form for Atlas. The old Atlas is now known as hydraulic Atlas. The current Atlas is new and improved, it is better in just about every way. Instead of hydraulics Atlas now runs on electricity.
Boston Dynamics was acquired by Hyundai back in June of 2021. The acquisition amounted to $880 million for 80% of the company. With the new acquisition, Boston Dynamics has gained a larger budget, which gave more way for more development, which has contributed to the new electric Atlas.
Every robot produced by Boston Dynamics could be considered to be pieces of art. The robots are very inspiring for many people. The group “Corridor Digital” created videos in reference to Atlas.
Engineering YouTuber Micheal Reeves had his own take on the robot Spot. He acquired an official model of Spot and modified it using his own homemade attachments. He made his own camera attachment using cheap alternatives. The homemade custom attachment he made would detect the center of a cup and then dispense alcoholic beverages.
Boston Dynamics is pushing forward for the future of robots. Their robots are magnificent spectacles of the technology they have achieved. At las-t, Atlas has gotten the upgrade they deserved.
