In the heart of competition, the Highline men’s basketball team faces trials and triumphs, embodying resilience and determination on the court. The Thunderbirds showcase their unwavering commitment to excellence, striving for success with each game they play.
Following recent matchups against Tacoma Community College and Lower Columbia College, the Thunderbirds reflect on their performances and prepare for the battles ahead. In an exclusive video interview conducted by James Orellana-Guzman, Highline men’s basketball head coach, Coach Dawson, provides insight into the team’s journey and their aspirations for the postseason.
When asked about the team’s feelings heading into the playoffs with nine games remaining, Coach Dawson acknowledges the competitive nature of their region, stating.
“We had a pretty good preseason, and we had some great games where we won some big games against some good teams,” said Dawson. He highlights the challenges they’ve faced and the need for continuous improvement, emphasizing the intensity of every game in their league.
Regarding standout players Keaine Silimon and Isaiah Vargas, Coach Dawson praises their contributions, stating, “Both Keaine and Isaiah are great young men, very skilled players… Both of those guys go to the glass hard.” He acknowledges their resilience as freshmen adapting to the college game and commends their all-around performances, which have been instrumental to the team’s success.

In addressing the impact of officiating and maintaining focus during intense moments, Coach Dawson emphasizes accountability and resilience. He said, “Our officials don’t win and lose games for us… If you’re always focusing your attention on the officials, you’re probably not paying a lot of attention to what it is you’re doing.” He underscores the importance of staying focused on their game plan and executing it to the best of their abilities.
Looking ahead, the Thunderbirds are gearing up for upcoming matchups against Grays Harbor College on Jan. 31 (with results not available at press time) and Pierce College on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
