Construction continues around the new Kent-Des Moines Light Rail station, but this time, instead of on the Light Rail itself, the construction is focusing on new affordable housing units.
For anyone following this publication quarter to quarter, it’s no surprise that constant local construction is a reoccurring theme. The Kent-Des Moines Light Rail station just finished construction and opened to the public last December, while the new construction started on March 18.
It was a question some had when taking the Light Rail: What would be done with the remaining two empty lots flanking the west entrance? In a notice of intent back in June 2023, Sound Transit stated that they’d be awarding Mercy Housing Northwest in partnership with Kent-based non-profit organization Open Doors for Multicultural families to create 199 apartments for low income families with affordable housing (and apparently a small business incubator and cafe).
The project has even grown since the initial announcement. Currently, it is 233 apartments for those making 30-60% the median income of King County. Of those units, 20% are set aside for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The building will also be providing a childhood learning center for families of children with learning disabilities.
It is impressive that affordable housing has followed so quickly after the Light Rail station opening. Hopefully, the proposed project’s completion time (summer 2028), doesn’t run into the problems that delayed the Light Rail’s opening schedule.
