MaST Center hosts “Shark in the Park” July 6 at Redondo Beach

Staff Reporter Jun 26, 2025

Calling all shark enthusiasts! Do you have a soft spot for sharp teeth and fish gills? Maybe you want to support Highline’s Marine Science and Technology center (MaST)? Either way, join the MaST Center on Sunday, July 6, at Redondo Beach to celebrate the Sixgill Shark.

Redondo Pier, home of the MaST, is one of the only locations where divers can get a glimpse of this particular breed of shark. So much so that the city of Des Moines, Wash., has been officially designated as the “Sixgill Shark Capital of the World”. These prehistoric creatures have been around for 200 million years, doing so by finding their homes in the deep ocean. These enduring creatures are known for their extra sixth gill, leading to their unique naming.

As Sixgill Shark season swims in and to kick off  Shark Week, join the MaST center in celebrating the Sixgill’s life & legacy with a day of “discovery, food, and family adventures,” according to the MaST Center promotional flyer.

Included in the festivities, will be the following family friendly events:

  • Live science demos
  • Hands-on ocean activities
  • Family games & crafts
  • Food trucks & local vendors
  • Shark-themed exhibits

The event will be held from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at both the Redondo Pier and the adjacent Wooton Park. Official MaST Center Sixgill shirts and hoodies are available.

After the festivities for “Shark in the Park”, the day will culminate with the MaST Center hosting a dive that afternoon. If you are a certified scuba diver and want to dive or a community member who wants to see the divers enter the water, splash time will be at 6 p.m., off the pier (if you are interested in diving, see the flyer at the end of this post for more information.)

All are welcome in the community, so please bring family, friends & shark lovers from all over!
