Snow causes Washington-wide campus closures

Staff Reporter Feb 06, 2025

Over the past week, many schools have closed their doors due to snowy weather conditions. According to Washington Regional Climate Center (WRCC), this is the weather report for the past week.

Snow covered trees and neighborhood streets for multiple days.

“Custer, Whatcom County: 8.8 inches of snow, Ferndale, Whatcom County: 4.8 inches of snow, Hoodsport, Mason County: 4.4 inches of snow, Olympia: 3.5 inches of snow, Des Moines, King County: 1.7 inches of snow, Tacoma, Pierce County: 1.1 inches of snow, Quinault, Grays Harbor County: 3 inches of snow, Aberdeen, Grays, Harbor County: 2.5 inches of snow, Lopez Island, San Juan Islands: 2 inches of snow.”

Most of the schools in the area, such as our very own Highline College, Green River Community College, and Pacific Lutheran University, experienced delays throughout the week as a result of the snow, with cancelled classes or classes starting around two or more hours later than usual.

The roads all around seem to be pretty clear thanks to the deicing companies like Highline Pavement Maintenance that have their trucks out keeping everyone safe, and cities that also provide this service for their inhabitants.

That being said, make sure to keep an eye out for black ice, which is a transparent coating of ice, found especially on a road or other paved surface, or slick patches on the road.

Keep an eye out for weather updates on the forecast, and make sure you are getting texts and emails from Highline so you don’t miss any updates concerning school hours.

Stay safe out there Thunderbirds, enjoy the snow!
