Musical artist Cashma, singer of “Chickpeas”.

Three songs/Three artists

Staff Reporter Jan 11, 2024

Spotify has over 550 million active listeners, and artists like Taylor Swift and Drake hover around 100 million monthly for themselves. But what else is out there, waiting to be discovered?

Here are three songs by three artists with under 15,000 active listeners that you should check out!

  1. Artist: Vanilla Abstract/Song: “Bend”
    • Vanilla Abstract has been compared to Fiona Apple and Tori Amos. Though “Bend” is a particularly energetic song, their lyrics can be heavy, and the perfect accompaniment to driving with the rain beating on your car. This makes more sense when you realize that the band hails from Seattle.
  1. Artist: Satomimigae/Song: “Dots”
    • Far from Seattle, let’s take a look at Tokyo’s acid-folk arena with Satomimagae. “Dots” shows off her masterful guitar work as well as her ethereal vocals.
  1. Artist: Cashma/Song: “Chickpeas”
    • Cashma hails from Barnesville, Ga. and will surely be the next big name in R&B when her music gets its due attention. It is no surprise that Sade is one of her inspirations because songs like “Chickpeas” overflow with the charm of classic ’80s R&B.

Of course the fun of finding gems in the music scene is sharing your findings with someone, so if you know of a local or underviewed artist, let the Thunderword know at tword@highline.edu and you may see them on our next installment of Three songs/Three artists!
