Highline student and talented student-athlete Rebecca Zenger embarked on an inspiring journey at Highline as she pursued her passion for graphic design and volleyball.
Her story showcases determination, adaptability, and a relentless pursuit of her dreams.
Hailing from the serene island of Kaua’i, Hawaii, Zenger’s artistic inclinations and love for creative problem-solving drew her towards a degree in graphic design.
Growing up, she was always captivated by drawing and painting, which ignited her desire to explore a career where she could channel her creativity into practical solutions. Recognizing the potential of graphic design to merge artistry and problem-solving, Zenger set her sights on becoming a freelance graphic designer and illustrator back on her beloved island.
Her path to Highline unfolded unexpectedly, but serendipitously.
As Zenger’s original plan was to attend a university to pursue a creative field and play volleyball, fate intervened when she encountered Chris Littleman, Highline’s head volleyball coach, during a recruiting event.
Although she initially chose another college, she soon realized it wasn’t the ideal fit academically and athletically.
Moreover, intrigued by Highline’s graphic design courses and the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Integrated Design, Zenger decided to explore this dynamic institution further and it became abundantly clear that Highline was the perfect destination to cultivate her creative potential.
Balancing the demands of being a student-athlete proved to be an exhilarating yet challenging experience for Rebecca Zenger.
Furthermore, during the fall quarter, with its full-fledged volleyball season and the start of classes, it demanded meticulous time management. Despite the intensity, Zenger found solace in the camaraderie of her teammates, many of whom hailed from her homeland of Hawaii. Building on the shared bond of their island roots, the team became a second family, offering a sense of familiarity in the midst of new beginnings.
Reflecting on her academic career, Zenger highlights the dual challenges she faced.
Firstly, she discovered that harnessing creativity for problem-solving requires strategic thinking and empathy. Shifting her perspective from art as personal expression to design as a solution for others insisted on a profound mindset shift, one that required perseverance and adaptation.
Secondly, being away from her cherished island of Kaua’i presented a personal challenge. While she acknowledges that she has yet to fully overcome this separation, Zenger has learned to embrace her time in Washington, cherishing the experiences and growth it brings while eagerly anticipating the future when she can return home.
Rebecca Zenger’s story embodies the pursuit of passion, resilience in the face of challenges, and a relentless commitment to personal and professional growth.
As she graduates in the Class of ’23, she leaves an indelible mark as a graphic designer and athlete, paving the way for future students to follow their dreams with unwavering determination.
With her talents and unwavering spirit, Zenger is poised to embark on an illustrious career where she can seamlessly merge her love for art and design, leaving a lasting impact wherever her creative journey takes her.
