While fear for one’s life may be one reason for gun violence, there are multiple factors that contribute to the problem. These may include: poverty, mental illness, domestic violence, and access to firearms. The recent shootings in the United States have once again centered attention around the urgent need for action. 

According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, as of May 10, there were over 15,000 deaths and 12,000 injuries resulting from gun violence in the United States in 2023. This includes six mass shootings all within the first day of the year. This data, when compared to other years, is only increasing and will continue to skyrocket if nothing is done to prevent these horrifying and tragic events.

Gun violence in America not only leads to physical harm, but it also has a psychological impact on individuals and communities. The constant fear of gun violence can lead to a sense of paranoia, making people feel unsafe in their homes, schools, and public spaces. This fear can also lead to a cycle of violence and retaliation, perpetuating a culture of fear and distrust. 

In addition, the availability of guns can fuel mistrust and suspicion, leading to incidents like racial profiling and discrimination. The impact of gun violence extends beyond the physical harm caused by guns and affects the mental health and well-being of individuals and communities.

Recent shootings have made the issue of gun violence even more urgent than before. It’s happening all over the world, affecting people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. The fact that everyone wants to feel safe is now at risk. In just a matter of days, several incidents have occurred that force society to take a hard look at the situation and rethink what needs to be done.

In April 2023, Ralph Yarl, a 16-year-old boy from Kansas, Mo., found himself in a devastating situation. His intention was to pick up his younger siblings from a friend’s house, but due to a mistaken address, he ended up at the residence of an 84-year-old Caucasian man instead.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Yarl, who had announced his presence, was met with gunfire as the elderly man shot through the glass door. Despite the gravity of his injuries Yarl managed to survive the shooting, but was left with severe wounds.

The incident sparked outrage and calls for justice, with many questioning the prevalence of gun violence in communities across the country.  

Kaylin Gillis, a 20-year-old, and three of her friends accidentally turned into the wrong driveway of an upstate New York residence, mistaking it for the home of someone they knew. Tragically, Gillis was fatally shot by the homeowner, 65-year-old Kevin Monahan, who allegedly fired two rounds from his porch at Gillis’s car.

Early Tuesday morning, four cheerleaders from Elgin, Texas were making their way back to the Austin area when they made a stop at an H-E-B supermarket where some of them had parked their cars. One of the girls accidentally attempted to enter the wrong car, prompting the armed occupant to exit the vehicle and fire five rounds, according to NBC News. 

Unfortunately, two of the girls, including 18-year-old Payton Washington, were hit by the gunfire. The suspect, 25-year-old Pedro Tello Rodriguez Jr., was charged with deadly conduct, a third-degree felony, by the police.

The recent shootings have left survivors and families of victims grappling with grief and trauma. It’s important to listen to their experiences and provide support in the aftermath of such tragedies.

President Joe Biden has urged Congress to pass measures like universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons, but it remains to be seen whether these measures will be successful.

For instance, after a mass shooting in 1996, Australia implemented a gun buyback program and has not had a mass shooting since. According to sources such as The Guardian, Governor.wa.gov, and The New York Times, the state has adopted historic measures to enhance gun safety. On April 25, 2023 Governor Inslee signed a new legislation into law, becoming the tenth state to enact such measures. 

The legislation includes provisions for comprehensive background checks, stronger regulations on assault weapons, and a requirement for safe storage of firearms. Washington has taken it a step further by passing a ban on selling specific semi-automatic weapons. This new law also prohibits the future sale, distribution, manufacture and import of more than 50 types of guns. However, this excludes those who already have them.

However, despite these state-level efforts, federal measures to address gun violence remain stalled due to political gridlock and opposition from powerful gun lobbies. A gun lobby is a group of people who argue for the right of the people to be able to own guns.

Despite the challenges, advocates of gun control continue to push for stricter gun laws and regulations to make communities safer.
