Highline College sweeped first and second place at this year’s Print ROCKS! Competition, an annual competition that is hosted by the Printing Industries of America Southern California.
Highline’s “Arcturus” took home second place in the Post Secondary Students category, while the printing project titled “Fireside Bistro Graphics” by Ron Lytle won first in the category and best in division. Ron Lytle is a recent 2022 Highline college graduate.
“Printing Industries of America Southern California is comprised of 13 western states and supports the commercial printing industry. They are supportive of printing-related training programs in high schools and colleges. Highline College has been a member for years. Attendees at the event donated a combined $11,300 toward scholarships for students studying printing production, graphic design, and business,” stated Dave Weber, Highline college’s print shop manager in a school email announcing their accomplishments.
Highline’s award-winning “Arcturus” is a student-run endeavor that has been brought to life at the end of every school year for over 40 years and gives students a creative outlet where they can share their art with the community.
All students, alumni, faculty, and staff are welcome to submit up to five of their original works, anything from photographs, poems, stories, comics, 2D art, and more. Entries in languages other than English are also welcome.
The journal can’t accommodate all of the submissions that are received, so you’ll want to start polishing up that writing and artwork now in order to make the best impression.
Inspiration can be found in past issues, all the way back to 1977, which are available for viewing at the Highline library. If coming to campus is not possible, “Arcturus Speaks” is a new online selection of videos showcasing artists sharing their poems and writings.
Be sure to check out the “Arcturus” website for the submission email address and official details as there are some caveats to the document formats and information required: https://arcturusliterarymag.highline.edu/submit/.
Whether or not you are ready to enter your own work to the journal, you can still get involved with the process by working as an editor. Every Winter and Spring quarter, ENG 290 Editing: The Arcturus is offered as a way for students to participate in the compilation process.
Seats are limited and require instructor approval, so the current faculty editor and course instructor, Susan Rich, asks that students interested in the class don’t hesitate to get in touch with her at srich@highline.edu.
