The Highline volleyball team bounced back vs Centralia on Wednesday, keeping them one game out of first in the NWAC West.

But early leads couldn’t keep the men’s and women’s soccer teams from dropping three games last week.

The previously undefeated women’s soccer team stumbled vs Tacoma, 3-1, on Saturday. Myka Carr gave the Lady T-Birds an early lead with a goal in the 17th minute. Tacoma roared back with three second-half goals from Kya Scott with two and one from Brianna Rivers.

The loss broke the Lady T-Birds’ four-game winning streak.

The team remains on top of the NWAC West at 6-1-1. Their next match is Saturday, Oct. 23 at noon vs 3-3-4 Centralia.

The Lady T-Birds hosted 0-8 Grays Harbor on Wednesday, with results unavailable at press time. Lower Columbia comes to Starfire to meet the ‘Birds on Wednesday, Oct. 27, also at 1 p.m.

The men’s soccer team dropped two games in a row, losing 2-1 to Bellevue on Oct. 13 before falling 3-1 to Tacoma last Saturday.

Midfielder Mark Rivera gave Highline an early lead with a goal in the 20th minute, assisted by Jesus Jeronimo. Tacoma took the lead and the win later in the first half with goals from Urial Madrigal and Alex Lopez.

Against Bellevue, Highline took an early lead on a goal from Zane Baumgardt, assisted by Marcos Santos. But Bellevue punched home two goals in the 88th and 90th minutes to take the win.

Due to those losses, the team dropped to second in the NWAC West at 5-5, 7-5 overall.

The T-Birds will host the 0-9 Pierce Raiders on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. This game will be the second-to-last home game left in the season. They welcome South Puget Sound to Starfire at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27.

The Lady T-Birds volleyball team blanked the third-place Lower Columbia Red Devils 3-0 on Wednesday. This win put the Lady T-Birds at 5-1, just one game behind Pierce for first in the NWAC West.

“We executed the game plan which gave us a huge advantage. We also controlled our side of the court,” said Head Coach Chris Littleman.

The Lady T-Birds Beat the Red Devils 25-17 in the first set, 25-21 in the second, and 25-11 to close them out in three. Highline got eight kills from Rebecca Zenger and seven kills and three blocks from Bethany Tuchardt.

Although the team has played well this season, Coach Littleman said the players always strive to get better.

“Each point should have the same effort whether it’s the beginning of the game, end of the game, winning by a couple points or down a couple points,” Littleman said.

The Lady T-Birds played 1-5 Centralia on Wednesday, with results unavailable at press time.

“Centralia is a very scrappy team. The ball comes over the net a lot,” Littleman said.

Highline then hosts Green River on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Pavilion.
