Jason Macduff wants to make music.
Macduff is a Highline student who is a budding music producer who hopes to work with other artists to make a career in music. He played piano and drums at Decatur High School; now he is composing and trying to work with other artists.
“What I do is make the type of music that I would want to listen to,” he said. “I mainly make the whole instrumental part of a whole song and would have someone else sing over it.”
One element of creating a song is music production, which is the act of overseeing the recording of songs and making decisions on where the song goes.
Macduff took up this task a year ago, when he downloaded some recording software and began experimenting.
He worked in his home studio with his desktop and his keyboard, for which he downloaded plugins that allowed him to play all different types of sounds.
Production is key to making a song enjoyable for listeners, but a lot comes with it, Macduff said.
He said he tries to do anything to make an artist sound their best, “whatever I can do to compliment an artist’s voice.”
Macduff produces R&B music currently, but he said that he would be open to producing for all different types of genres.
Macduff said he has one song with an artist that is not finished yet but has the potential to be great once it is completed.
Macduff said he now looks back at his work so far and can already see where he could make improvements.
“I think I could’ve done all my projects better,” he said. “I rarely trust myself when it comes to when I should finish a project, because something different can always make it sound better or worse.”
Macduff said he wants to produce more music for other artists to sing over and get his instrumentals out to more people.
