Advising Center offers college success workshops

Highline’s Advising Center will be holding a series of “Keys to Highline” college success workshops this April.

Staff and faculty will provide tips and strategies to help keep up grades, save time and money, and manage stress as a college student. All students are welcome to attend.

COVID-19 relief funds available to students

Applications for Highline’s COVID-19 Financial Relief Fund are opening April 9 for Spring Quarter.

Students who have experienced increased expenses or financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible, and are encouraged to apply for award. Students must be enrolled for Spring Quarter in order to be eligible.

Highline Foundation opens student scholarship applications

The Highline College Foundation has opened applications for its 2021-2022 student scholarships.

Students can fill out a single online application to apply for the several Foundation scholarships on offer. Part-time, full-time, transfer, incoming, international, and undocumented students are all eligible to apply.

Spring Quarter editing positions open for Arcturus magazine

Highline’s literary arts magazine the Arcturus Literary Journal is looking for editors.

Professor Susan Rich’s Editing the Arcturus course (ENGL 290) is being offered for Spring Quarter, and gives students the opportunity to edit for the magazine.

Upcoming virtual conferences for students — SOCC and QTOPIA

Registration and applications for the upcoming Students of Color Conference and QTOPIA Summit events have opened up for Highline students.

The annual Students of Color Conference is a two-day event taking place April 15 and 16, consisting of virtual workshops, activities, and discussions via Zoom pertaining to identity, social justice, and more.

IRS urges people to file tax returns

The Internal Revenue Service has issued a reminder for people who were eligible but did not receive one or both of their Economic Impact (Stimulus) Payments to file a 2020 tax return, as they may still be eligible to claim their payment.

Stimulus payments were issued in two rounds based on individuals’ 2019 tax returns, and have been issued to everyone who was eligible.

Partial closure on I-5 South in Federal Way

Two lanes of I-5 South will be closed during the night in Federal Way between South 288th Street and South 320th Street starting Feb. 23.

The lanes will close at 9 p.m. each night and reopen at 6 a.m. from Feb. 23 to Feb. 25. Traffic will remain open in all other lanes.

Link lane closures

30th Avenue South will be closed at its intersection with Kent Des Moines Road in Kent starting as early as Friday, Feb. 5. The right lane of Kent Des Moines road will also be closed near this area.

Transfer application workshops offered

Highline’s Transfer Center is offering two application completion workshops for students looking to complete transfer applications for the 2021-2022 school year.

Pacific Highway closed for work

State Route 99 will be closed in SeaTac between South 204th Street and South 208th Street starting this Friday, Jan. 15.

All lanes will close 8 p.m. Friday to allow for construction of the Sound Transit Federal Way Link Extension project.

UW deadline is Friday

The financial aid deadline for University of Washington applicants is next Friday, Jan. 15.

Students planning to apply to any of the UW campuses, for any of next years’ quarters, must submit their WASFA or FAFSA financial aid forms by this date.

Major road to be closed for Sound Transit work

South 272nd Street in Kent will undergo several lane closures starting Dec. 8.

Free COVID testing available at Highline

Free COVID-19 testing is now being provided on campus in the South Parking Lot.

The testing site is open Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Testing is free to everyone, with or without medical insurance and regardless of immigration status.

Academic Achievement Scholarships available

The deadline to apply for the Winter Quarter Academic Achievement Awards is Nov. 30 by 5:30 p.m.

The Achievement Awards offer full tuition for one quarter, up to 15 credits. Last year more than $12,000 was awarded. International and Running Start students are not eligible to apply.

Laura Yanez, the program manager of the Transition Success HUB at Highline, and Joshua Magallanes, a professor at Highline, will talk about navigating historically oppressive spaces as a queer person of color at a Zoom session this week.

Honors Program virtual poster session online

Posters and videos of Honors Programs students’ work will be displayed virtually June 8 through 12.

International Student Programs graduation ceremony to be via Zoom

The International Student Programs will hold its first virtual graduation ceremony on June 10. This ceremony is to celebrate international students who are graduating this spring.

Students can get help with navigating the end of the quarter by attending the second Spring into Wellness mental health workshops created by the Counseling Center.
