Denys’s weekly wonders: StarDate 11/2/2023

Hold your horses, folks, because we’re about to dive into the wacky world of Horse Diving! We’re about to unveil a historical oddity that’ll have you saying, “You’ve gotta be hoofing kidding me!” Ever wondered what in the neigh-tion it is and how it works?

Saddle up as we gallop through the history of this gravity-defying spectacle that had riders jumping through hoops, quite literally, from heights of up to 40 feet. This mind-boggling equestrian adventure originated way back in the mid-1880s in the circus and then took Atlantic City, N.J., by storm. Well, that is the delightful, daring, and decidedly damp world of Horse Diving!

Picture this: brave riders, mounted on their trusty steeds, guiding them to leap from heights of up to 40 feet. If that doesn’t sound like a wild carousel ride, then I don’t know what does! But this isn’t your average day at the racetrack; it’s Horse Diving, the original “splash-hit” sensation that made waves back in the mid-1880s and later became as synonymous with Atlantic City, N.J., as saltwater taffy.

Now, while organizations like PETA might have concerns, there’s something undeniably fascinating about the idea of bringing Horse Diving back to the limelight. After all, who could resist the temptation of witnessing such an exhilarating and unique spectacle?
