The joys of participating in a literary journal: Launch party June 8, 2023

Kristina Hoppler • Arcturus Editor Jun 01, 2023

Arcturus hosts its 55th annual launch party that uncovers a collection of art through the lens of the editors.

“Arcturus” is Highline College’s literary and art journal run by students. It has been supplying Highline’s students with an imaginative outlet for 55 years. Over those years “Arcturus” has published works from students, staff, faculty, and alumni. In the newest edition, arriving on June 8, the journal features a compilation of poetry, prose, art, and photography.

“My favorite part about ‘Arcturus’ is being surrounded by fellow students who are just as passionate about the journal as I am. Taking on this project, and being around when this edition is released is the most rewarding job there is,” said “Arcturus” editor Kristina Hoppler.

One of the splendors of “Arcturus” is that it is a literary journal made by students, for students. The editing team is made up of the students in the English 290 class, which is run by Susan Rich, faculty for creative writing and film studies at Highline.

Additionally, the “Arcturus” design and printing team is composed of students at Highline’s print shop, which is run by print shop manager Dave Weber.

The importance of journals like the “Arcturus” is the representation of new writers and artists. “Arcturus” shines an award-winning light on those within its pages. Being featured in a journal like this one can help kickstart a career.

To mark this year’s release on June 8, the editing team of “Arcturus” is hosting two parties. The first will begin at noon in Building 2, and the second will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Building 2.

Contributors will be reading and showing their pieces with Dr. Mosby joining them at the afternoon event. Anyone is welcome to attend, and those that do come will be served a light meal and be given a free copy of this year’s edition.
