Softball season kicks off

Zaith Mavesere Staff Reporter Mar 14, 2024

Softball season is finally back for Highline supporters who have waited patiently. There are new faces on the team who are ready and excited to tackle the new challenges that come with this season’s schedule.

The team seems to have a good mix of fresh new faces and the more experienced players of the team. The roster currently hosts 11 players, with eight of them being freshmen and the other three sophomores.

The team will be under the leadership of Head Coach Kristine Foley, who has gracefully led the team since 2021. Foley was also a player herself and possesses a high level of experience.

On their media day, the team was looking well and vibrant in their green and white kits. The emergence of a young inexperienced group is the sign of new beginnings and the building of a strong foundation which Foley can build on in the coming cycles.

The Thunderbirds kicked off their campaign last weekend in Pasco, Wash. They played an impressive four matches within two days. That’s a load that few can carry, as their efforts are truly commendable.

On Saturday, they played against North Idaho in their first game which resulted in a 33 to nil loss. Their second, and last, game of that day was a 21-5 loss against Yakima Valley. It was a tough day for the Thunderbirds, but their efforts are truly respected as they represent all at Highline College.

On Sunday, their first game of the day was against Grays Harbor which ended in a 17-2 loss. Regardless of the score, these results just indicate the room for improvement. The last game of their weekend series was against Walla Walla, this game showed the team’s ability to come back better and stronger. The loss was minimized to 1-0, nicely done by the team to keep representing in the face of challenges.

The roster for the Highline women’s softball team this season will be as follows:

Team: Alyssa Ascuncion (Fr.), Jenna Bettge (Fr.), Hannah Cox (Fr.), Tatum Cox (Fr.), Corinna Cunningham (So.), Jazlyn Furuya (So.), Ava Lewis (Fr.), Kyleigh Ross (Fr.), Nina Sprinkle (Fr.), Isabella Weibe (Fr.), and Eeron Wong (So.)

Head Coach: Kristine Foley
