Inside the tenure review process

Have you ever wondered how your favorite instructor gets tenured by the college? The Tenure Review Committee (TRC) is responsible for reviewing any faculty member up for tenure. This means they are granted many benefits including stronger job security until retirement.

The committee currently has eight members including two college administration officials, five faculty members from their respective divisions, and the Vice President of the Associated Students of Highline College. It is led this year by co-chairs Tracy Brigham and Razmehr Fardad from the Health Department and Pure and Applied Sciences Divisions, respectively.

There were some members of the college’s leadership team that provided input regarding which instructors deserve to be tenured including President Dr. John Mosby and Vice President of Academic Affairs Emily Lardner.

“Instructors are the backbone of what makes institutions like Highline bright as they provide quality knowledge of today and the future,” said Dr. Mosby. “They also demonstrate how to contribute to our multigenerational and multicultural society in many ways.”

Dr. Lardner serves as a non-voting member of the Tenure Review Committee as part of her responsibilities leading the Academic Affairs department. She provides not only her input but also works with Dr. Mosby regarding the recommendations that the TRC have put forward for tenure approval.

The Board of Trustees then gave their unanimous vote to grant tenure to six different instructors from various fields. “It’s just a privilege and an honor to have the opportunity to look through all of the work that goes into this process,” said Board Chair Travis Exstrom. “I just want to thank the Tenure Review Committee for their contributions to the tenure review process.”

The six tenured instructors, their families and many other members of the Highline community gathered in Building 2 (aka Highline’s version of the Bellagio resort) to celebrate not just their tenure status, but also their journey to receiving that special recognition.

These instructors that were granted tenure all had different journeys but they share the goal of contributing positively to Highline College, Washington state, and society at large. The recognition of their tenure only solidifies their success stories as members of an ever changing institution for many years to come.
