In the realm of women’s tennis at Highline College, the past season went well enough, despite a challenging schedule. The team carved out moments of success, finishing with a 4-10 overall record and an admirable 4-2 record in conference play. Their journey culminated in a memorable run to the championship finals, a testament to their unwavering spirit on the court.

As the new season dawns, the Highline women’s tennis team stands at the precipice of opportunity, ready to embrace the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead.

In a conversation with Head Coach Laura Rosa, it becomes clear that their aspirations extend far beyond victories alone. Coach Rosa articulates a vision that prioritizes academic excellence and fosters a culture of camaraderie and mutual support.

“Our first priority is grades, no exceptions,” Rosa asserts. “Second is to ensure players honor their sport and their team, fostering a team-led culture where selflessness reigns supreme.”

The transition from the successes of the previous season to the goals of the present is seamlessly guided by Coach Rosa’s leadership. With a keen eye on recruitment and a wealth of experience to draw upon, she speaks of the promising blend of talent and leadership that defines this year’s roster.

“We brought in three outstanding freshmen who will immediately bolster our match success,” Rosa affirms. “Their integration into the team is facilitated by the seasoned leadership of our sophomores, hungry to continue our legacy of excellence.”

Yet, amidst the optimism, Coach Rosa acknowledges the hurdles that lie in wait. The geographical sprawl of NWAC tennis competitions presents logistical challenges, demanding unwavering commitment and time management from the players. “It’s a test of their dedication, both to academics and the sport,” she muses. “But it’s also the crucible in which our team’s unity and resilience are forged.”

As the new season began, the Highline women’s tennis team faced tough scrimmages against Division lll Universities (Puget Sound University, George Fox University, and Pacific University) resulting in consecutive losses.

In their first scrimmage against the University of Puget Sound, Highline fell 6-3, followed by a 9-0 defeat against George Fox University, and another 9-0 loss to Pacific University. Some of the most notable players from each match:

Kalli Wiker showcased dominance in singles play, securing a commanding victory in the number one spot for George Fox University.

Cassey Hitch displayed determination in her hard-fought win in the number three spot for George Fox University.

Sophie Denham exhibited composure and skill in her close two-set match for Puget Sound University.

Mia Yamaguchi demonstrated talent and versatility with a convincing win at the five-single spot for Pacific University.

Their next game was the Thunderbirds’ official season opener against the Bellevue College Bulldogs. The match took place Tuesday, March 5, at home (with  results not available at press time.)
