When it comes to student leadership, the Associated Students of Highline College (ASHC) has represented the multiracial, multicultural, and multigenerational student body for many years. They do so through connecting students with various leadership opportunities and advocating for solutions to the biggest issues that students face, like textbook affordability.

President DeVoni Young, Vice President Clara Swart, and Speaker of the Caucus Kimberly Wangari are charged with the task of ensuring all students have a say in the decisions that will impact their future.

“Being in student leadership, particularly as the student government president, often provides a unique perspective. I am entrusted with representing the student body, fostering unity, and addressing various issues. It can be both fulfilling and demanding and requires effective communication, problem solving, and a commitment to enhancing the overall student experience,” said Young.

“The role often comes with opportunities for personal growth and the chance to make a positive impact on the college community. I’m very proud of the work that I have done with my cabinet to ensure that our student body is heard and their experiences are valued to both staff, faculty, and members of our administration.”

The overall responsibilities of all student government members include attending all ASHC-sanctioned events, including council meetings every other week. As well as participating in their respective committees, including the Services & Activities, Tenure Review, and Student Success.

In addition to their collective responsibilities, each member of the ASHC team has individual responsibilities, such as President Young’s relationship with the leadership team and Board of Trustees through monthly reports; Vice President Swart leads the council meetings every other week; and speaker Wangari coordinates the Student Leader of the Month program.

It has been a very busy year for the ASHC team, and they have more in store over the next few months including preparing for elections which will take place in spring quarter. Their commitment to excellence is their most important goal, and the initiatives they implemented have helped them exceed that goal of representation and sustainable leadership.
