Highline to host Year of the Dragon Festival

Cam Lyons Staff Reporter Feb 08, 2024

The Lunar New Year is approaching, and that means the Year of the Dragon event is coming soon to the Highline campus!

The Inter-Cultural Center (ICC) and Global Student Ambassadors (GSA) have been working together to give the Highline community a true celebration on Feb. 15 with a stockpile of games and food for any students who want to come by and join the festivities.

Inter-Cultural Center peer facilitator Chansophalysa Than sat down with the Thunderword to explain what the Lunar New Year means to her, as well as providing everyone a sneak preview of the good things to come.

“I’m looking forward to sharing the traditions,” Than said. “Basically New Years is a family gathering and I’m an international student, so I can’t go back home right now because of school. But now I can share this with my community here at Highline.”

The Mt. Constance room in Building 8 will be filled with traditional games like Vietnamese blackjack, bingo, and Bau Cua Ca Ngua Dice, as well as a full spread of delicious foods and snacks.

Than, who is in her fourth quarter here at Highline, also wanted to remind students to wear red if they’d like to join in on the spirit of the 2024 Lunar New Year. Than, along with ICC and GSA, are excited to see you there!
