Shopping and gift-giving are the highlight of some people’s holiday season, yet it can easily cross the line into over-consumerism. There are many alternatives to reduce your spending and consumption.

Whether it is to save money during the holidays, or to reduce your impact on the environment, it is necessary to observe your personal consumption habits.

According to The Conference Board Holiday Spending Survey, “US consumers plan to spend an average of $985 on holiday-related items in 2023…and an average of $654 on holiday gifts, up 6.7% [from last year].”

While living in capitalist society it is hard not to resort to consumerism. But there are other ways one can still give back this year.

Arts and DIY gifts are a great way to give personalized, thoughtful gifts without breaking the bank. Many people will treasure these keepsakes by appreciating the time and effort that went into the creation.

Some current trendy projects are air-dry clay trinkets and paintings. Simply look for inspiration online or on social media like Pinterest or Youtube. Visit your local art store for materials that can be used on multiple presents. Thrift stores may also have cheap materials for projects. Either way you can invest in these materials that will benefit far past the holiday season.

Volunteering is a perfect way to give without spending by just providing your time. For some people the holidays are the hardest time of year. Not all people are fortunate to celebrate the holidays for many different reasons and circumstances. However, volunteering is a way to give back to your community. Reach out to local food banks, churches, and schools.

To find information search your city’s website and find their volunteer page to get a list of current events. King County has different options available to fit different needs and abilities. Check out United Way of King County for the list of volunteering opportunities. If you are fortunate enough to donate to organizations, it can help out those who are in need this year.

Shop small businesses instead of large corporations to give back to our community.

Many local businesses struggle to stay open or remain profitable because of the lack of customers. Buy unique, personal gifts that cannot be found in any regular store. Whether its handcrafted or resold, shopping locally provides presents for close friends and family while benefiting your local business owners. Walk the streets of town and stop by new stores to see what they offer.

All in all, shopping and spending during the holiday season is hard to avoid. Be intentional about your purchases and aware of your consumption. Think outside the box and reach for these alternative ways of giving.
