The TRiO Student Support Services program at Highline College held its Fall Kick-Off Event celebrating the start of a new academic year with the theme “The Challenge of the Beginning: On Your Own, But Not Alone.”

The event was held Tuesday, Oct. 17 and featured speeches from Dr. John Mosby, President of Highline College, Dr. Tolu Taiwo, TRiO Director, and TRiO alum Josais Jean-Pierre. They spoke about the importance of community and utilizing campus resources like TRiO to support student success.

TRiO provides a wide array of services to support low-income, first-generation college students and students with disabilities. This includes academic advising, tutoring, book and technology loans, success workshops, campus visits, scholarships, and more.

“TRiO has been instrumental to my college journey,” said Jean-Pierre. “The advising, tutoring, and network of support helped me navigate college. Advice that Jean-Pierre gives to all students at Highline is “your why needs to be bigger than your excuses, and to always maintain a growth mindset.”

“After leaving the Navy I was nervous to start this new chapter,” said TRiO student Jordyn. “But TRiO gave me the confidence and tools I needed to succeed.”

The kick-off event provided an opportunity for TRiO students to come together, meet the staff, and learn more about the program. All students in attendance received a free catered lunch and TRiO swag.

With support from dedicated staff and utilizing resources like TRiO, Highline students can overcome challenges and achieve their academic goals. As Dr. Mosby said, “You are not alone on this journey – we are here to help you succeed.”
