The Highline College men’s and women’s golf teams made a remarkable showing at the recent Highline Invitational Golf Tournament held at the picturesque Indian Summer Golf Course on Oct. 9 and 10, 2023. The tournament attracted teams from colleges across the region, making it a competitive event.
The Thunderbirds’ women’s golf team, led by the impressive performances of Esther Sibbet and Cienna Cabrera, showed great determination on the course. Esther Sibbet, a talented freshman hailing from Tacoma, Wash., secured the 20th position overall with a gross total +47 of par. Her consistent rounds of 95 and 96 resulted in a total gross score of 191.
Cienna Cabrera, another remarkable freshman from Las Vegas, secured the ninth position overall with a total to par gross of +28. She posted scores of 83 and 89 for a total gross of 172. The team, despite their best efforts, finished the tournament with a “Did Not Finish” (DNF) due to the challenging competition.
Highline’s women’s golf team faced tough competition from their rivals, with Fraser Valley College, North Idaho, and Bellevue College clinching the top positions. Despite the hurdles, the Thunderbirds exhibited great sportsmanship and determination.
The men’s team put on a display of impressive skills, with David Sibbet, Kaden Clark, Derek Kaapana, and Trey Alwert leading the charge. David Sibbet, a freshman, secured the third position overall with a total to par gross of +4. He showed remarkable consistency with rounds of 78 and 70, resulting in a total gross of 148.
Trey Alwert, a sophomore, also put on an outstanding performance, securing the 14th position overall with a total to par gross of +12. His rounds of 85 and 74 added up to a total gross of 156.
Despite these remarkable individual performances, the men’s team finished in fifth place overall with a total to par gross of +88. Their combined score of 664 highlighted the fierce competition at the Highline Invitational.
Notable rivals for the men’s team included Fraser Valley, North Idaho, and Southwest Oregon, who secured the top positions in the tournament.
The Thunderbirds exhibited dedication, perseverance, and remarkable skill throughout the Highline Invitational Golf Tournament. Despite the challenging competition, both teams left a lasting impression, showcasing the potential for even greater success in the future.
